Three boys found gold in Cheporor on Saturday.

By Tuesday, 10,000 people were standing in that same village. From all over West Pokot, and from Uganda.

I know Kanyarkwat. It is quiet. There is no water for 10,000 people. No toilets. No police post for a crowd that size.

The gold is real. The danger is also real.

The gentleman seated in front of Amilo is Mr. Opiyo, a native of Yokia Village on Mfangano Island. He was once her first husband, from whom she separated before crossing paths with Mabona. Sadly, Opiyo later suffered a mental breakdown brought on by severe depression.

What moves many people most is Amilo's unwavering compassion. Despite their history, she chose to care for him with dignity and grace.

In Luo language, they say, "Chien kiyan," a profound proverb that reminds them: "Never disregard your past."
