At the WIOMSA Symposium - themed “One Ocean, One Future” - I found myself reflecting not just on the groundbreaking science being shared but on how we tell these ocean stories.

Surrounded by over a thousand scientists, policymakers, and practitioners, I realized that the data and discoveries we celebrate only reach their full power when told with empathy.

Empathetic storytelling in marine science is about more than awareness - it’s about connection. It’s listening before telling and portraying communities as partners in knowledge, not just subjects of study. It’s moving from “saving” narratives to ones that honour dignity, humour, and hope.

Because every chart has a heartbeat. Every wave carries a story. And when we tell these stories with care - centering people, culture, and shared purpose, we make ocean literacy not just a scientific pursui but a human one.

Swipe through this carousel for some reflections on what empathetic storytelling means for the ocean community - and how empathy can inspire solidarity and action for our oceans.

PART 1: Understanding mCDR

The Marine Carbon Dioxide Removal (mCDR) workshop, hosted by the - Ocean Climate Innovation Hub and partners ( , -Ocean Resilience & Climate Alliance, and ), explored how the ocean, our planet’s largest carbon sink, can help restore global climate balance.

Convening the workshop immediately after the WIOMSA symposium (the largest gathering of marine scientists, policymakers, and practitioners in the Western Indian Ocean region), felt timely and powerful.

Building on WIOMSA’s theme of “One Ocean, One Future,”, this workshop carried forward vital conversations on ocean-based carbon removal and what it means for Africa’s future.

It was a moment to connect science, innovation, and justice, ensuring that as we explore emerging ocean-climate solutions, the voices and priorities of our region remain at the heart of the global response.

From emission reduction to carbon removal, the climate conversation is evolving, and Africa must not be left behind.

With Africa’s rich coastline and growing ocean innovation ecosystem, the potential is immense. What remains is ensuring these solutions are equitable, safe, and rooted in community benefit.

One Ocean. One Future. One Planet to Restore.

Here are my reflections and key takeaways.

THE ENERGY is ethereal ✨️

Over 1,000 scientists, policymakers, researchers, and ocean advocates have gathered in Mombasa for the 13th WIOMSA Scientific Symposium!

The energy in the room has been electric — a true meeting of minds shaping the future of the Western Indian Ocean.

With 10 thematic areas explored — from climate change resilience, biodiversity, and fisheries to governance and ocean literacy — every session reminds us that while our challenges are vast, our vision is united.

is so appropriate for this premier marine science Symposium in the WIO region

The WIOMSA Symposium has had THREE Days of sessions spanning groundbreaking research presentations, mini symposia, special sessions, side events, poster sessions, keynote speeches, and more.

I chose to highlight the session on Ocean Literacy since it deeply aligns with the work I do today.

I have attended a good number of the sessions, and thanks to the app, navigating between sessions has been seamless. WIOMSA has truly run a tight ship, and the outcomes have been nothing short of amazing. We still have TWO MORE days of spectacular science and impossible vocabulary coming up, but I am ready to ramble!

For me, this youth-led symposium was a reminder that ocean literacy is not just about science; it’s about people, culture, and the future we want for Africa’s oceans.

Honoring the Trailblazing Women of Marine Science in Africa

Today, I pause to celebrate and pay tribute to the incredible women who have paved the way in advancing marine science, ocean sustainability, and knowledge in Africa.

From leading groundbreaking research to championing coastal communities, their legacies remind us that the ocean’s story cannot be told without women’s voices, courage, and brilliance.

Though some are no longer with us, their work lives on in thriving reefs, mangrove forests, empowered communities, and in every young African scientist daring to dream bigger.

May we continue their mission: to protect, restore, and reimagine our ocean with empathy, equity, and resilience.

Swipe through this tribute to meet the legends who continue to inspire generations.
