The picture below is of AOKO HULLY. one is a bit enhanced. Hully is a household name in Luo music, the lady who has 7 songs to her name, all by Brother Charley, but who was she?

Before I answer that, let me tell you about Brother Charly. Born Charles Oindo K’Oloo, and popularly known as Brother Charly, was a man born without siblings, the only child in his family. Growing up, he longed for the companionship of brothers and sisters, and so he created that family around him. He began calling other children his brothers and sisters, and they returned the gesture, calling him “Brother.” That name stuck. Over the years, it became more than a childhood nickname. It became his musical identity, Brother Charly.

Though Brother Charly would eventually marry three wives, there were women who stirred his soul beyond the boundaries of marriage. One such woman was Penina Achieng’. They met when he was already married, but that didn’t stop her from falling in love. She wanted marriage, but it was impossible under the circumstances. In her pain and love, she made a vow that she would never marry another man unless it was Brother Charly. She lived in Nairobi, and he would visit her from time to time. Then, for reasons unknown, he disappeared from her life for three years. When he finally made the trip to Nairobi to see her, it was too late. Penina had died in a road accident, and her story had already been buried with her. The grief was deep, and to keep her memory alive, Brother Charly composed four songs in her honor, among them Achieng’ Born Zo and Achi Born Kabro.

But nothing, not even the tragedy of Penina, compares to what Brother Charly went through with Aoko Hully. If there is one woman who truly lived inside his music, it is her. Hully wasn’t just a muse. She was his obsession, his heartbreak, his endless chapter. To this day, no other Luo Benga musician has composed as many songs for one woman as Brother Charly did for Aoko Hully. Seven songs, each carrying the weight
