Katwanyaa FC and Jua Kali Starlets Crowned Champions at Governor Wavinya Cup 3rd Edition
Kenyatta Stadium, Machakos, was brought to life today as the 3rd Edition of the Governor Wavinya Cup ended in thrilling fashion, showcasing top-tier grassroots football and raw talent. Defending champions Katwanyaa FC successfully retained the men’s title after edging out Scotlanders FC in a tense penalty shootout, following a goalless 0–0 draw after 90 minutes. In the women’s final, Jua Kali Starlets emerged victorious with a hard-fought 1–0 win over Talanta Starlets, the decisive goal coming just minutes into the second half.
The victory crowned Katwanyaa FC champions for the second consecutive year, underlining their dominance in the competition, while Jua Kali Starlets announced themselves as a rising force in women’s football. Both winning teams walked away with a KSh 1 million cash prize each, as the tournament once again lived up to its promise of rewarding excellence. The generous prize structure applied equally to both men’s and women’s teams, with first runners-up also earning KSh 1 million, second runners-up KSh 500,000, third KSh 200,000, and fourth-place teams taking home KSh 100,000.
Speaking during the finals, Governor Wavinya Ndeti reaffirmed her administration’s commitment to supporting and protecting local talent, stating that sports remains a key pillar for youth empowerment and economic growth in Machakos County. She noted that the success of the first, second and now third editions of the Governor Wavinya Cup proves that her vision is taking shape, reinforcing her rallying call “Chakula Mezani, Pesa Mfukoni” as a practical and achievable reality for the youth.
Chief Guest Dr. Kalonzo Musyoka praised Governor Wavinya’s leadership and the county’s investment in sports, noting that such initiatives demonstrate how sports can transform lives and provide sustainable livelihoods. He urged other governments to emulate Machakos’ approach, emphasizing that when leadership prioritizes youth and talent development, communities prosper and the nation benefits.
