Upon assuming office two and a half years ago, my administration launched an ambitious campaign to restructure and revitalize the Maasai Mara National Reserve, with the objective of preserving and enhancing this invaluable natural asset.
Some of the interventions implemented include the enactment of the Maasai Mara National Reserve Management Plans, equipping our rangers, constructing roads within the Reserve, and introducing tech-based conservation initiatives, among others.
Today, we are deeply honoured to receive this prestigious recognition from the World Book of Records, UK, officially certifying the Maasai Mara National Reserve as the home of the world’s greatest annual terrestrial wildlife migration.
This global accolade not only celebrates the awe-inspiring migration of over 1.5 million wildebeest, zebras, and antelopes, but also highlights the unparalleled ecological significance of the Greater Maasai Mara Ecosystem, which harbours over 25% of Kenya’s biodiversity.
The migration is more than just a spectacle. As the herds arrive in Kenya, they come to mate and graze, making our country a vital link in the continuity of this extraordinary natural phenomenon; one that is essential to the health and balance of the greater Serengeti-Mara ecosystem.
This recognition is a proud moment for Kenya, for Narok County, for our conservation partners, and for all who cherish the Maasai Mara. We celebrate it with joy and extend a warm invitation to the world: come and witness this marvel of nature with us. Visit the Maasai Mara, where every crossing is a testament to life’s resilience.
