🚨Flu Hits 25‑Year High in the U.S.🚨

Flu activity in the United States has reached levels not seen in 25 years, with nearly all states reporting high or very high illness rates.

According to the CDC, an estimated 11 million Americans have already fallen ill, with about 120,000 hospitalizations and 5,000 deaths so far this season — marking a substantial jump compared with recent years.

Outpatient visits for flu‑like symptoms and hospital admissions are climbing sharply, and the dominant strain is a rapidly spreading variant of Influenza A (H3N2, subclade K).

Health experts are urging everyone who hasn’t yet gotten their flu shot to do so immediately, especially vulnerable groups like children, older adults, and those with chronic illnesses.

Have you or anyone you know been affected by the flu this season?

Canada recorded its highest measles cases in 14 years in 2025. After years of relatively low numbers following the elimination of measles in 1998, Canada faced a massive outbreak in 2025 with over 5,200 confirmed and probable cases reported nationwide — far surpassing the previous high of 751 cases in 2011.

This represents a dramatic surge and shows how quickly measles can spread when immunity gaps widen.

The outbreak was multi‑jurisdictional, affecting provinces including Ontario, Alberta, Manitoba, and British Columbia, and was linked to under‑vaccinated communities and international importation. In Ontario alone, more than 2,300 cases were eventually recorded before that province’s outbreak was declared over, and Alberta saw nearly 2,000 cases as of mid‑2025.

Because measles is highly contagious and can spread rapidly through populations with low vaccination coverage, this resurgence led the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) to declare that Canada has lost its measles elimination status after more than a year of sustained local transmission — a setback not seen since elimination was achieved decades ago.

Health officials emphasize that over 80% of the cases were among people who were unvaccinated or whose vaccination status was unknown, and that routine immunization with the MMR vaccine remains the most effective way to protect individuals and communities from measles.

Why do you think measles outbreaks are coming back after so many years of low cases?

Scientists have developed a new antibiotic that could change how gonorrhea is treated worldwide.

The drug, called Zoliflodacin, is the first new oral treatment for gonorrhea in decades and works even against drug-resistant strains.

Unlike current treatment that requires a painful injection, this one is taken as a single pill dose. Large international trials showed it effectively cured most urogenital, throat, and re**al infections, with only mild side effects like stomach discomfort.

Experts say this breakthrough is important because gonorrhea is becoming harder to treat, and the new medicine was developed through a not-for-profit partnership to help keep it affordable and accessible, especially in high-burden countries.

Would you prefer a pill over an injection for treatment?

A new study reveals a shocking truth: men with diabetes are at a significantly higher risk of infertility!

Diabetes doesn’t just affect blood sugar — it can disrupt hormone levels, lower testosterone, and damage s***m quality.

Chronic inflammation and oxidative stress caused by high blood sugar can harm s***m production, reduce motility, and even damage DNA.

Diabetes can also affect blood flow and nerve function, making it harder to achieve erections, which adds another barrier to fertility.

This is a wake-up call for men with diabetes to monitor reproductive health and seek guidance if planning a family.

Did you know diabetes could affect fertility this way?

For years, Venezuela’s public health care system has been collapsing. Hospitals often lack basic supplies, medicines, and even safe water, making routine care nearly impossible to access.

The impact on women and children is especially severe. The maternal mortality rate has soared to around 227 deaths per 100,000 live births — far above the regional average. Neonatal and under‑five deaths have risen sharply from preventable causes like infections and malnutrition.

Nearly 30% of infants under one year have never received essential vaccines, and 24% of women aged 15–49 are anaemic, putting pregnancies at serious risk.
Women bear the brunt of this crisis. With limited access to prenatal care and contraceptives, many face unplanned pregnancies or unsafe procedures. In poorer and remote areas, irregular antenatal visits and overburdened clinics mean complications that could be prevented often turn deadly.

Pregnancy and childbirth have become dangerous ordeals, leaving expectant mothers with little support or hope.
What can the international community do to help Venezuelan women access safer, better health care? Share your thoughts in the comments, and follow Joseph Mmwa for more updates on global health issues.

A new typhoid vaccine, EuTYPH-C In Multi-dose, has shown excellent safety and strong immune protection in a Phase 3 trial conducted in Kenya and Senegal.

The study, involving over 3,200 participants from infants to adults, found that the vaccine was well tolerated, produced a robust immune response, and worked well alongside other childhood vaccines like measles-rubella and yellow fever.

Importantly, its protection lasted at least 6 months after vaccination. Already approved in Korea, the next step is WHO prequalification, which could allow global distribution to fight typhoid, a disease that causes millions of cases and tens of thousands of deaths every year.

This new vaccine offers hope for more affordable and stable typhoid prevention in high-risk countries.

How important do you think it is for countries to have access to more affordable vaccines?

🚨UPDATE IN HIV CURE RESEARCH 🚨

CRISPR GENE THERAPY PERMANENTLY REMOVES HIV DNA FROM INFECTED CELLS IN LAB TRIALS

A new CRISPR gene-editing technology has successfully removed HIV DNA from infected human cells in laboratory trials, offering a potential path toward a cure. Researchers used CRISPR’s “molecular scissors” to target and cut out the virus’s DNA, which normally hides within human cells and evades standard treatments.

While the lab results are promising, experts caution that this approach has not yet been proven in humans. Early clinical trials of a therapy called EBT‑101 have shown that the treatment is safe and detectable in participants, but the virus rebounded when antiretroviral therapy was paused, indicating that a full cure remains out of reach.

The findings mark a significant milestone in HIV research, as scientists continue to explore ways to deliver CRISPR safely and effectively to every infected cell.

Do you think this breakthrough could be the first step toward an actual HIV cure?

The World Health Organization has issued a stark warning about a growing global mental health crisis, revealing that more than 1.1 billion people worldwide—nearly 1 in every 7—are now living with a mental health condition.

In a new WHO news release published on 2 September 2025, the agency reports that anxiety and depression alone cost the global economy an estimated $1 trillion every year due to lost productivity. Despite this, governments still spend just 2% of health budgets on mental health, a figure that has barely changed since 2017. Su***de remains a leading cause of death among young people aged 15–29, and the world is off track to meet the UN target of reducing su***de deaths by one-third by 2030.

The crisis is further worsened by severe workforce shortages, with a global median of only 13 mental health workers per 100,000 people, and far fewer in low-income countries. In response, the WHO is calling for urgent, systemic action—including increased and fairer funding, a shift toward community-based mental health care, and stronger efforts to protect human rights and reduce stigma.

What is the biggest barrier preventing people from accessing mental health care today?
