Rising Typhoid Cases in Nairobi: What You Need to Know

Health officials in Nairobi have raised an alert after an increase in typhoid fever cases in some estates. Contaminated water and poor sanitation have been linked to the outbreak.

What is Typhoid?
Typhoid is a serious bacterial infection caused by Salmonella typhi. It spreads through food or water contaminated by human waste.
Common Symptoms:
~Prolonged fever
~Weakness
~Stomach pain
~Headache
~Loss of appetite

What You Can Do to Stay Safe:
✅ Drink boiled or treated water
✅ Wash hands with soap and clean water, especially before eating
✅ Eat food that is properly cooked
✅ Avoid roadside food, e.g mtura if hygiene is questionable
✅ Seek medical help immediately if you experience symptoms

CHIKUNGUNYA IS BACK — AND IT’S CLOSER THAN YOU THINK

You may feel fine today…But somewhere nearby, someone is waking up with a fever they can’t explain, and joints that feel like they’re on fire. That’s how Chikungunya starts. A mosquito bite is all it takes.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has raised the alarm: Chikungunya, a mosquito-borne virus, is spreading fast across Africa, Asia, and even parts of Europe and yes, Kenya is at risk.

🧠 Medically Speaking:
Chikungunya virus is spread by Aedes mosquitoes, active during the day.
It causes:
🔹 Sudden high fever
🔹 Severe joint pain (can last for months)
🔹 Rash, fatigue, and headaches

There’s no specific treatment only symptom relief. And for older adults, kids, and people with weak immunity, the recovery can be long and painful.

⚠️ The Danger?
This isn’t just a “one-day fever.” It can cripple your ability to walk, work, or care for your loved ones. And it spreads fast in areas with standing water, poor drainage, or blocked gutters.

Here’s how to protect your home and family:
✅ Empty containers with stagnant water
✅ Use mosquito repellents (sprays, coils, creams)
✅ Sleep under a mosquito net, even during the day
✅ Wear long-sleeved clothing in the early morning and evening
