Ethiopia πͺπΉ is preparing to launch its first large-scale domestic gold refinery, ending its decades-long practice of exporting raw gold to Dubai for refining.
Under a new policy, the National Bank of Ethiopia requires all gold mined in the country to be refined locally into standard bullion bars before export.
The refinery is expected to increase export earnings, strengthen foreign exchange reserves, and help reduce gold smuggling.
The facility is in its final testing phase and is expected to begin operations in mid-to-late 2026, supporting growing gold production from major mining projects, including the Kurmuk Gold Project.
