This morning, I was watching a political video that deeply captured my attention. In the clip, the late Raila Odinga quoted one of Martin Luther King Jr.’s most famous speeches:
“I have been to the mountaintop. I have seen the Promised Land. I may not get there with you, but together we shall get there.”
Baba went on to say that it was not a must for him to become the President of Kenya, but Kenya must have a good president.
This raises an important question for Kenyans: What did Baba truly mean when he said, “Kenya must have a good president”?
Raila Odinga was a leader who travelled across Africa and interacted with many presidents and heads of state. Through those experiences, he understood what true leadership meant and what a good president should do for his people and country.
Baba believed in equity and fair distribution of resources. He believed in creating jobs for the youth and uplifting vulnerable families through programs such as the proposed Kshs 6,000 monthly support grant. Such an initiative would have greatly improved the lives of many struggling Kenyans.
He also introduced the idea of “Babacare,” a healthcare plan aimed at ensuring every Kenyan, regardless of financial status, could access affordable medical care. In education, Baba envisioned free learning from primary school to university, a move that would have significantly reduced illiteracy and expanded opportunities for millions of young people.
When viewed objectively, many of these ideas had the potential to improve the standards of living in Kenya.
As Baba Raila Odinga said, he might not reach the Promised Land with us, but together we shall get there. We must therefore avoid losing direction. That direction is only lost when we begin viewing leadership and national issues through tribal lines.
Whether you support “One Term” or “Two Term” leadership should be your own independent decision. Do not allow others to manipulate you into hating an elected or aspiring leader because of personal or political interests.
Remember, Baba Raila Odinga worked with President William William Samoei Ruto before his passing. If you believe Baba shared his vision for Kenya with President Ruto, and that President Ruto is genuinely working to achieve that vision, then perhaps the “Two Term” group aligns with your beliefs. However, if you feel that the current leadership does not reflect Baba’s dreams and expectations for Kenya, then the “One Term” group may represent your position.
Dear Kenyans, learn to make solid and independent decisions for yourselves.
