Myth: dark skin doesn't need sunscreen. Truth: melanin gives roughly SPF 13 protection — dermatologists recommend SPF 30 minimum. Skin cancer in dark skin is often caught late because people don't check palms, soles, or under nails. Daily SPF protects you either way. 🧴☀️

Mpox is now in 40 of Kenya's 47 counties — 1,298 cases and 19 deaths recorded as of Sept 6, still rising. Kenya's death rate (1.78%) is nearly triple Uganda's (0.63%) for the same strain — likely due to later detection and care access gaps, not a worse virus. Know the signs, seek care early.

💉 GLP-1s are changing more than weight loss.

Semaglutide and tirzepatide have transformed the conversation around obesity and weight management.

But there's another conversation emerging:

What happens to the body while the weight comes off?

Weight loss isn't necessarily made up entirely of body fat. Lean mass can also decline, which makes muscle preservation, adequate nutrition and physical activity important parts of the bigger picture.

At the same time, researchers are studying GLP-1 medicines across a much broader range of health outcomes — including cardiovascular, kidney, liver and metabolic health.

So perhaps successful weight loss shouldn't be measured by the scale alone.

Less excess fat. Preserved physical function. Better metabolic health. A healthier body overall.

That's the conversation we should be having.

🚨 KENYA IS DEALING WITH FOUR PUBLIC HEALTH THREATS AT ONCE.

Mpox. Measles. Vaccine-derived polio. And Ebola — as a regional preparedness concern.

Mpox is already affecting 40 of Kenya’s 47 counties, with 1,298 confirmed cases and 19 deaths reported as of 6 September.

Meanwhile, Kenya is strengthening preparedness at its western borders because of the ongoing regional Ebola situation.

But this isn't a story about panic.

It’s about something more important: can Kenya’s health system detect, coordinate and respond quickly when several public health threats are happening at the same time?

Swipe through the carousel for the bigger picture.

🎗️ Could some cancer treatment in Kenya become dramatically cheaper?

A new Pfizer–KEMSA deal is expected to bring down the price of selected cancer medicines — in some cases from as much as KSh1 million to below KSh50,000 per cycle.

The medicines cover cancers including breast, colorectal, lung, prostate, stomach and oesophageal cancers, as well as some blood cancers.

That sounds like a huge win.

But here's the question we should be asking:

Will the lower prices actually translate into affordable, accessible treatment for patients?

Because announcing a cheaper medicine is one thing. Making sure patients can actually get it — and that SHA coverage works as intended — is another.

We break down what the deal could mean for cancer patients in Kenya. 👇

💊 WHO WILL BE ALLOWED TO GIVE YOU YOUR MEDICINE?

Kenya's pharmacy sector is facing a major dispute over new Good Pharmacy Practice Standards.
More than 11,000 pharmaceutical technologists are threatening industrial action, arguing that the new rules could restrict some of the roles they currently perform.
The Pharmacy and Poisons Board says the reforms are intended to strengthen patient safety, quality pharmacy services and regulation.
But there's a bigger question for the public:
Could changing who performs certain pharmacy functions affect access to medicines and pharmaceutical services?
The standards are expected to take effect in January 2027.
Here's what you need to know.

🚨 KENYA'S HEALTH SYSTEM IS RUNNING OUT OF BACKUP.

The nationwide nurses' strike has entered its sixth week.

Now there's a new development: KMPDU says doctors could also go on strike if the nurses' dispute isn't resolved within seven days.

The nurses' strike began on 29 July over longstanding employment and collective bargaining grievances, including implementation of the CBA, the 2017 Return-to-Work Formula and permanent absorption of UHC workers.

Meanwhile, the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights has raised serious concerns about the impact of the disruption on patients. It reported that it had taken note of reports of 79 deaths between 31 August and 2 September — including maternal, neonatal and perinatal deaths.

But here's the part that matters:

KNCHR has NOT established that the nurses' strike caused those deaths. The circumstances are still being investigated.

This isn't simply a story about a strike anymore.

It's a story about what happens when a health system loses a critical part of its workforce — and the people who are supposed to provide the backup are already stretched.

Swipe through.

What happens next could affect healthcare access across Kenya.

Kenya ranked 3rd in Africa for health workforce data — 92% availability, jumping from 8th place in one cycle. Sounds boring, but this is the exact system meant to catch staffing gaps like the medicines regulator's own near-50% shortage. The real test: does better data actually fix anything? 🌧️ THE RAIN HASN'T EVEN STARTED — BUT KENYA IS ALREADY PREPARING.

Kenya's Ministry of Health has activated a multi-sectoral contingency plan ahead of anticipated 2026/27 El Niño rains.
And this isn't simply about flooded roads.
Flooding can contaminate water sources, disrupt sanitation, compromise food safety and make it harder for people to reach healthcare.
That creates conditions in which cholera, typhoid, dysentery and other water- and food-borne illnesses can spread.
The important part? Preparation starts before the water rises.
We've broken down the health risks — and the practical steps households can take — in this carousel.
Save it. Share it. And send it to someone who needs to prepare for the rains.

48.9% of asthmatic kids in Nairobi also have allergic rhinitis — most people mistake it for a cold that never ends. Dust mites are the top trigger, hiding in bedding and carpets.
Left untreated, it can worsen asthma. Here's how to actually tell the difference. Full breakdown on the slides 🤧
