Wavinya targets 2000 recruits annually in youth empowerment plan

The number of recruits joining the recently established Machakos Youth Empowerment program, dubbed Machakos Youth Service (MYS) could hit 2,000 per year if things go as planned.

Governor Wavinya Ndeti now says her administration is exploring budgetary logistics of doubling up the number of recruits up from the current 1,000 in order to create more opportunities to the youth.

“We are going to invest more in the camp in order to make sure next time we can admit up to 2,000. Our goal is to change the lives of these young men and women some of whom had given up in life. Ours is to show them the right path by giving them the desired skills,” Wavinya said after visiting the trainees Wednesday evening ahead of Friday’s pass out ceremony.

According to the governor, the trainees are scheduled to transit to six centers of excellence in various parts of the county where they will enroll to study various vocational courses before joining community service.

“We shall then equip them to start their own businesses and even absorb a number of them to join the county inspectorate staff,” governor Wavinya said, dismissing a section of politicians who have been criticizing the program.

At the same time, the governor put on notice politicians who have been using the youth as agents of political violence, saying that MYS has come at the right time to offer young people better opportunities in life.

Govt mulls review of HIV policy at the workplace

The Government is considering a review of public service workplace policy on HIV and Aids in order to mitigate the effects of loss of man hours occasioned by the disease and other related chronic health conditions at the workplace.

Public Service and Human Capital Development Principal Secretary, Amos Gathecha says about 36,260 public servants are currently living with HIV, a situation he termed as a major drawback to productivity.

Addressing the media after opening a validation workshop for heads of departments at Machakos University, the PS said the Government is compelled to review the policy to serve as a guide on appropriate integrated approaches to address HIV and Aids towards the achievement of national development goals.

“This policy will guide measures to mitigate the effects of working hours due to HIV and related chronic health conditions at the workplace and improve employees’ productivity and the ability to seek healthcare services without fear of discrimination,” he said.

Gathecha pointed out that once reviewed, the policy will promote a safe and healthy work environment in the public service that guarantees dignity and fair labor practices for all public servants.

He noted that the policy stems from an increase in mental health challenges in the public service that have been attributed to social and pre-existing medical challenges including HIV/Aids and non-communicable diseases.

“Notably, there is an increase in demand for counselling services among public servants and that is why the Government is implementing interventions aimed at addressing mental health challenges,” he said.

According to the PS, among the key measures so far implemented to strengthen the responses to HIV and Aids include the development of the public service workplace policy reviewed in 2017 and currently under review and adherence to Human Resource Manual, 2016 on HIV/Aids issues.

Foreign jobs recruiters pitch camp at Mumbuni Technical as hunt for skilled manpower intensifies

As the Kenya Government continues to preach the gospel of exportation of labor to foreign nations, stakeholders in the training sector and human resources companies are calling on the Kenyan youth to focus more on skills-oriented training in order to secure employment in foreign nations.

Speaking at Mumbuni Technical Training College while hosting a recruitment drive for skilled electricians and plumbers destined for jobs in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, the institution’s director, Collins Kaloki said Vocational Training Centres are a fertile breeding ground for skilled manpower that is on a high demand in developed countries.

“Technical Training Institutions are playing a critical role in processing and supplying highly skilled manpower required to drive global economies and I am proud that Mumbuni Technical Training College is at the center of this progressive initiative of training professionals to not only meet the domestic labor market but also service the international space,” said Kaloki.

Kaloki noted that technical colleges, through the assistance of the Government, are actively working closely with human resources experts and other industry players to design and operationalize market-driven courses that offer solutions to the modern day trends.

Officials from the Global Face Human Resources agency pitched camp at the institution to carry out interviews for dozens of youth who turned out to try their luck in securing employment in the leading global business destination.

“As a recruitment agency, we are working closely with the Government and training institutions to link up Kenyan professionals willing to work abroad with employers from all over the world. The demand for skilled workers is quite huge out there and we encourage qualified Kenyans to take advantage of the current window to apply,” said Nicole Juma, a senior official with Global Face HR Agency.

Detectives in Nairobi are investigating a murder case where this 29-year old man was intercepted by police on patrol in Huruma area while carrying a suspicious bag, which on examination was found to contain a human body parts belonging to a young woman.

Upon interrogation, the suspect admitted that they belonged to his wife Joy Fridah Munani, 19.

The suspect, John Kiama Wambua, later took the officers to his house where the other body parts were recovered under his bed.

Machakos Governor Wavinya Ndeti today launched the Machakos Youth Empowerment Programme dubbed Machakos Youth Service which is aimed at empowering the youths with life skills, technical and entrepreneurial skills to navigate the challenges of a dynamic 21st Century.

The Governor inaugurated the first cohort of 1000 youths at the Machakos Youth Service center domiciled at the Agricultural Training Center in Machakos.

Two fully-equpped 'Barracks' for male and female,a dinning hall and washrooms have been recently built by the County Government to accommodate the recruits.

The youths drawn from the 40 Wards in the County will be boarded at the MYS Center for 21 days after which they will proceed to five Tertiary and Vocational Training Institutions (TVET) within the County where they will gain more skills and graduate after four months.

Thereafter,the youths will be facilitated with capital to venture into business in a partnership signed between the County Government of Machakos and the Kenya Commercial Bank.

Speaking at the launch ceremony,Governor Wavinya said the programme will admit two cohorts of 1000 youths each per financial year.

She said the youth empowerment programme will enable the youths to avoid exploitation by politicians during election time.

"Youth empowerment is not giving our children handouts in every election cycle. Youth empowerment is not about mobilizing our children to cause chaos every now and then. Youth empowerment is equipping our children with skills and knowledge that will propel them into career path platforms that will enable them to succeed in life,"said Governor Wavinya.

Machakos County Commissioner Josephine Ouko said the National Youth Service cannot absorb everyone and that the MYS will bridge the gap.

She said the recruits will learn life-transforming skills at the Boot camp which are not taught in other formal institutions.

St Anne’s Josta cleared for boarding

St Anne’s Josta Academy in Machakos has been granted a clean bill of health to resume boarding services to learners.

The development came after a series of thorough inspections conducted by the Ministry of Education’s Quality Assurance personnel based in Machakos Sub-County to ascertain the safety of the boarding facilities in both private and public institutions.

Last year, the school was listed among hundreds of institutions that were yet to comply with safety guidelines as prescribed by the Government.

But on Tuesday January 7th 2025, Machakos Sub-County director of education, Simon Mutemi toured the institution where he commended the management for setting high standards of safety and general education infrastructure.

“The school has adhered to the safety measures and guidelines provided by the Ministry of Education and is hereby recommended for re-registration as Day and Boarding primary and junior school. We acknowledge receipt of all necessary documents to facilitate the re-registration process,” Mr Mutemi said.

At the same time, Mutemi said several other schools that were flagged for non-compliance with safety regulations remain black-listed against offering boarding facilities to learners.

In both girls’ and boys’ dormitories at St. Anne’s Josta Academy, adequate bed-spacing has been maintained and comprehensive infrastructure for running water installed in all the washrooms. An automatic smoke detector alarm system has also been installed in both dormitories further enhancing swift action in any fire emergency.

An ultra-modern tuition complex designed to accommodate junior school is also nearing completion. The school has also established a modern library as well as a state of the art science laboratory fully equipped with all teaching apparatus.

“Our aim is to Make St Anne’s Josta Academy the ultimate centre of excellence in quality education and holistic nurturing of learners into reputable and prestigious career pathways to transform their dreams into realities," said Collins Kaloki, the institution's director.
