Kenyan President William Ruto has been ranked as the second most corrupt leader globally by the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP).

The ranking, based on public nominations, saw Ruto receive over 40,000 submissions, the highest in OCCRP history. Only Syria’s ousted President Bashar al-Assad surpassed him to claim the top spot.

Ruto's administration has been accused of massive corruption. OCCRP, an international investigative journalism network, compiles its annual rankings based on public nominations and assessments of leaders' involvement in organized crime, corruption, and power abuse.

The peace talks between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) have collapsed due to disagreements over the M23 rebel group.

Rwanda demanded that the DRC engage in direct talks with M23, which the DRC refused, asserting that M23's existence is directly supported by Rwanda.

This disagreement led to the cancellation of the peace summit scheduled in Luanda, Angola, on December 15, 2024.

The DRC's President Félix Tshisekedi has accused Rwanda of using M23 as a proxy, while Kigali insists on addressing M23's grievances within a political framework. This breakdown has stalled efforts to resolve the ongoing conflict in eastern DRC.

SPLM threatens to shut down social media in South Sudan

The Secretary-General of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM), Peter Lam Both, has threatened to shut down social media in South Sudan.

The threat came in response to claims on social media that the Presidential Envoy on Special Programs, Dr. Benjamin Bol Mel, had been sworn in as the acting president and had ordered the Central Bank Governor to audit the accounts of the first family.

Addressing a press conference at the SPLM House in Juba on Tuesday, Both warned that if such rumors continued the government would shut down social media.

“SPLM is for the freedom of expression and speech, but when it is abused, it becomes a crime. We have the capacity to shut social media in South Sudan. If the social media becomes an anti-SPLM, we will put our hands up and allow those who have the capacity to shut it down to do that,” Both said.

“Even in the region, you don’t have access to social media like we have in South Sudan, and I am not even talking about big countries like China. So, let us not push the button, let us not abuse the freedom of speech, it will end up with you being locked out,” he added.

Both said that in the last few months, there has been a surge on negative propaganda against the SPLM on social media platforms including, Facebook, WhatsApp and X, formerly Twitter

“These campaigns are largely sponsored by disgruntled South Sudanese anti-peace elements and foreign agents and these people are being identified by their computer IP locations. Some are based in South Sudan and others in foreign countries. Their main aims are to discredit the government, create disunity within the SPLM, defame the leaders of our country and develop rifts and mistrust among leaders of the same government and the same party,” he stressed.

“There was a rumor circulating on WhatsApp and Facebook that there was an arranged SPLM meeting to be held in Rumbek, Lakes State, to hand the leadership of the SPLM to Co

Garang John disappears online, cuts communication with his family

The family of the exiled Journalist, Garang John confirmed that their son Garang John has disappeared online since the 17th of November 2024. According to a letter seen by Dalwuot Media, Garang’s family said that his social media contacts are being called and no one answers the calls.

Garang who is a critic of the government went mute on 18th November 2024 which has raised so many questions in netizens' minds and circulation of rumors regarding his whereabouts.

“The family would like to advise the general public to refrain from persistent rumors regarding Garang John's absence on social media. Instead, we strongly encourage all individuals who are concerned about Garang John to work with the family in efforts to reestablish communication with him,” the letter reads.

“It is important to note that Garang severed his relationship with the government in Juba following his illegal detention and humiliation he faced there. We raised Garang and we know he means what he says. He promised never to associate with President Salva Kiir's regime, but vowed to continue performing media work whenever and wherever he could as part of his contribution to South Sudan's development.”

“According to John, all he wants from the government is an apology, and he has no plans to get involved in the country's political bickering. All he wants is justice and accountability for himself and other citizens who have suffered similar atrocities! Garang John had his last communication with some family members on November 17th, 2024.”

“His social media contacts are being called, but no one is answering. We also urge anyone in contact with him to encourage him to return calls.”

Garang John was detained in Blue House Custody in January 2023 and was later freed without charges after 60 days of detention. After his release, Garang was exiled to an unknown Country according to media reports, and has been writing articles against.

Makuei Lueth: Refrain using telephone if complaining of high tariffs

The Minister of Information and Tele Communication Services, Michael Makuei Lueth has urged netizens who are complaining about high tariffs to stop using phones.

“If anybody is complaining (high mobile tariffs), refrain from using the telephone because it is not compulsory. If you feel that you are being overcharged, you better refrain from using it, and also this will give us an opportunity to learn how to use telephones because there are people who use telephones for conversation for over 1 hour, 2 hours, 3 hours." he said according to Eye Radio quotes.

Netizens have been complaining since last month after telecommunication networks increased mobile tariffs.
