THE RING IN HER DRAWER π
PART 2
Emma stood frozen in the doorway.
Her eyes locked onto the ring box sitting on the kitchen table.
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
Finally, I asked the question that had been burning in my mind all day.
"Whose ring is it?"
She looked away.
"Please don't do this," she whispered.
My stomach dropped.
I had expected confusion.
Maybe even a reasonable explanation.
But guilt?
That was the one thing I wasn't prepared for.
"Emma, answer me."
Tears filled her eyes.
"It's complicated."
I laughed bitterly.
"No. It's actually very simple. Either that ring is for us or it's for someone else."
She sat down and buried her face in her hands.
Then she said something that made my heart stop.
"The ring belongs to my husband."
I felt the room spin.
My husband?
We had been together for almost two years.
We had taken vacations together.
Met each other's families.
Talked about marriage.
And now she was telling me she already had a husband?
I stared at her in disbelief.
"You've been married this whole time?"
She nodded slowly.
But then she looked up and said:
"He's been missing for three years."
My confusion turned into shock.
Missing?
Before I could ask another question, someone knocked on the apartment door.
Three loud knocks.
Emma's face turned pale.
She looked terrified.
Then her phone buzzed.
A text message appeared on the screen.
It was from an unknown number.
"Don't open the door. He found you."
