Ain't that a bitch

A study from Kyoto University has shown that dogs can judge human competence, with female dogs being the best it. Researchers observed dogs watching two people try to open treat containers—one successful and one unsuccessful.

The dogs focused more on the competent person, especially when food was involved, indicating they could assess human skill levels.

Lynette A. Hart, a professor of anthrozoology, said the findings align with dogs' natural attentiveness to humans. Female dogs often show greater trainability and attentiveness, which might explain their stronger ability to evaluate competence. Breed differences also play a role, with German Shepherds excelling in tasks requiring problem-solving.
