Did You Know?
Nairobi Hospital had a Presidential Wing (now the Executive Wing) erected for ageing President Mzee Jomo Kenyatta whose heart problems meant he had one foot in the grave?
The Wing had a lawn-just in case Jomo requested for his beloved traditional dancers!
Nairobi Hospital was selected for its proximity to State House Nairobi.
Alas! Jomo died in State House Mombasa on August 22, 1978!
Nairobi Hospital was initially named The European Hospital, a high-end facility for mzungus.
The hospital's foundation stone was laid by Kenya Governor, Sir Evelyn Baring.
That was on October 20, 1952- the same day Sir Baring declared a State of Emergency which he said would last 'a few months.' But the Mau Mau had other ideas and it lasted 7 years!
Did You Know it was almost renamed The Njonjo Hospital after its chair, AG Charles Njonjo, who helped start Lee Funeral Home-to avoid being taken to City Mortuary when he died?
Asians, self-reliant, had M.P. Shah in Parklands!
Africans had Pumwani, Mathare (then called Mental Hospital) & herbalists!
