Buni Media is a multimedia organization involved in the development, production, and distribution of video, audio, animation, digital and print publication content; in the organization and curation of events; and in training and capacity building.
Accountable society: Buni Media envisions a society in which everyone plays their role to achieve positive progress, and faces warranted consequences in case of failure or wrongdoing e.g. prosecution by law or dismissal from duty. Our work criticizes lack of integrity in social, economic and political matters, whether by individuals, groups or institutions, and informs citizens and government officials about their roles and responsibilities.
Creative ecosystem: Buni Media contributes to the growth of the creative sector on different levels:
We train creatives and content producers in technical skills like camerawork, puppet making, editing, etc.
We support creatives to develop content that addresses social and political issues.
We pursue innovative distribution channels for multimedia content.
Buni Media has completed several projects, including:
1. The XYZ Show (a political satire puppetry TV series, currently planning for its 14th season) which reached a total of 7 million people online and a further 5 million people on broadcast in the past season.
2. Katiba (the constitution of Kenya in graphic form), that has so far illustrated 8 chapters of the constitution and carried out street activations in 2 informal settlements and a panel discussion that included Kenya’s former chief justice. This project is still ongoing.
3. Ogas At the Top, a Nigeria-focused political satire puppetry web series.
4. Women in Politics (a participatory theatre production), that was performed in an informal settlement in Nairobi.
5. The Nairobi Satire Festival (a celebration and exploration of satire and satirical works from East Africa and around the world, and a platform for the recognition of satire as an impactful avenue for social and political change). The last edition had a total of 100 participants and was attended by up to about 3,000 members of the public, over the 5 days period of the festival.
6. Buni Media Content Workshop (a capacity building program for content creators in Kenya). Structured as a 2-hour master class session, in 2019, Buni Media carried out 10 such sessions and reached a total of approximately 150 content creators.
