There has been public outrage after Julia Njoki died in custody following her arrest during the July 7 SabaSaba protests in Nanyuki.
Njoki was arraigned in court on July 8, 2025 and granted a bail of KSh. 50,000, which she was unable to pay. She was held at Nanyuki Women’s Prison, where she died due to injuries allegedly sustained from a beating while in custody.
A medical report cites blunt force trauma as the cause of her death. Rights groups demand an independent probe into her death and police brutality.
