The Assassination of Tom Mboya: A Tragic Chapter in Kenya's History

Thomas Joseph Odhiambo Mboya, born on August 15, 1930, was Minister for Economic Planning and Development until his tragic death at age 39, when he was shot on July 5, 1969, on Government Road (now Moi Avenue) in Nairobi, after visiting Chaani's Pharmacy.
Nahashon Isaac Njenga Njoroge was convicted and later hanged for the murder. His arrest sparked suspicions of a political assassination, especially after Njoroge's comment, "Why don't you go after the big man?"
Mboya's assassination prompted riots in major Kenyan cities. During his eulogy, President Jomo Kenyatta highlighted Mboya's pivotal role in Kenya's independence, stating, "Kenya's independence would have been seriously compromised were it not for the courage and steadfastness of Tom Mboya."
In his honour, a statue of Mboya was erected on Moi Avenue, and Victoria Street was renamed Tom Mboya Street.
