Noah Wanyama: Father Who Molded His Five Children To Multi-Millionaire Sports Personalities

In this life, every parent’s wish is always to see their children succeed in life.

While the majority emphasise on academic excellence, the Wanyamas – family of Noah Wanyama, has produced successful athletes, all of whom followed in the footsteps of their father.

The retired footballer is the father of former Harambee Stars captain, MacDonald Mariga, Victor Wanyama, Thomas Wanyama, Sylvester Wanyama, and Mercy Wanyama, all of whom have excelled in their disciplines.

In this article, WoK narrates the success story of the Wanyamas while highlighting the feats achieved by the amazing sportsmen and woman who hail from this family.

Noah Wanyama

The patriarch of the Wanyamas played as a winger for Kenya Premier League side AFC Leopards and the Harambee Stars national team.

Wanyama met his wife and mother to their children, Mildred Wanyama through sports. She was a netball player. The couple met while working for the Kenya Railways in the 1970s.

“I was just a junior clerk and he was senior clerk. We met through sports during the KICOSO games. That is where our journey began,” she said during a past interview with Citizen TV.

Wanyama played for AFC Leopard for 16 years and had a stint with Harambee Stars in the 1970s.

“When I used to play, I would go with them to the stadium. I would give them a ball to play with, and sometimes I brought a ball home, and that is how they learnt to play,” he says.

The veteran footballer believes that the discipline he instilled in his children over the years contributed to their success.

MacDonald Mariga

Mariga is arguably one of the greatest footballers the country has ever produced. He played football in Europe featuring for various clubs in his illustrious career.

The former Harambee Stars captain began his playing career at Ulinzi Stars before moving first to Tusker FC and then to Kenya Pipeline while still in school. He was part of the Kamukunji High School ‘Golden Boys’, which also included Kenyan striker Dennis Oliech

The central midfielder moved to Sweden in 2005 to play for third Division side Enköpings SK. After only one season at ESK, he signed for Helsingborgs IF before the 2006 season. His success at Helsingborgs was immediate.

Mariga signed for Parma which played in Italy’s Serie A. His impressive stint earned him a move to Inter Milan where he won the UEFA Champions League in 2010.

Victor Wanyama

The immediate former Harambee Stars captain’s footballing resume speaks for itself. As of today, Wanyama is the captain of Canadian side CF Montreal Impact which plays its trade in the US Major League Soccer (MLS).

He has featured in the past for Belgian side Beerschot, Scotland’s Celtic FC, English sides Southampton and Tottenham Hotspurs.

Thomas Wanyama, Sylvester Wanyama

The two Wanyamas ply their trade in the Kenyan leagues. Thomas was a midfielder for KPL side Sofapaka.

Edwin Sifuna: How ‘Boss From Hell’ Forced Me To Resign From Sh 400 000 Salary Job

When you see Nairobi senator Edwin Sifuna criticizing the government, cheering ODM leader Raila Odinga, and trouncing his political opponents, you may think it is something he has done all his life.

However, in an exclusive interview with Willis Raburu, the prominent lawyer bared his soul, revealing the remarkable struggles that paved his path to becoming Nairobi’s senator.

From a jobless stint of 19 months to becoming one of the most vocal legislators in the country, this is his journey as told by WoK:

Sifuna’s odyssey began in 2008 when he graduated from Nairobi University with a law degree. However, his joy was tainted by the political turmoil that engulfed Kenya during the 2008 post-election violence.

The turbulence in the country had dire consequences for his employment prospects, leaving him jobless for a grueling 19 months. “Lawyers were not in demand at the time,” he said.

During this period, he resided in a modest bedsitter in Nairobi’s South B, with rent arrears piling up to six months’ worth. However, he was lucky to have an accommodating landlord.

His fortunes turned when he landed a job as a lawyer for the bread company Supa Loaf at a salary of sh 40 000. Naturally, his first paycheck was used to clear his rent arrears.

The ascent continued as he landed another job at an advertising company. “The job was good because they treated me as a manager from the first day,” Sifuna recalled.

He was in charge of the company’s legal affairs, and he relished a salary of sh 150,000, complete with a company car. This new opportunity allowed him to upgrade to a three-bedroom house.

The downside to this new job was pressure from his boss, whom the vocal legislator described as a ‘boss from hell’. “He would sometimes call and wake me in the middle of the night to inform me of something that needed to be done,” he said.

By 2013, Sifuna was earning a respectable 400,000 Kenyan shillings per month, but the toll on his mental health became too great.

He made the audacious decision to resign and set up his own law firm. “I gave myself a target that if I could only make 50,000 shillings per month, that was enough to sustain me,” Sifuna recounted.

It was then that he decided to vie for a political seat in his home in Kakamega. However, he was denied a ticket by ODM. Crushed and financially strained after party nominations, he returned to Nairobi.

Fridah Mokaya: First Black Woman To Receive A PhD in Nuclear Physics

The academic achievements of Kenyans in the diaspora has put the country in the world map of academia.

This is evidenced by the likes of Dr. Patricia Kingori, Oxford University’s youngest black and female professor, Professor Robert Mokaya – the only black professor of Chemistry in the UK feted by the queen, Dr. Maria Othieno Bayerl, and Dr. Fridah Mokaya, the first black woman to earn a PhD in Nuclear Physics from University of Connecticut (Uconn) and who is the subject of this article.

Background

Fridah was born into a family of five – four girls and a brother – as her parents’ second born daughter. She was born and raised in Nairobi.

Her parents went the extra mile all through her childhood years to give her and her siblings the best life they could afford.

“I can never forget to give a special mention to my mother who was the disciplinarian and who ensured that we turned out to be fine children in society,” she said in a past interview.

At that early age she knew that she wanted to be a scientist when she grew up, a dream she would realize despite several hurdles along the way.

Education in Kenya

Dr. Fridah Mokaya is an alumna of Pangani Girls High School where she says her future was shaped.

When she was in Form 3, she was required to let her academic performance decide if she was going to take either the humanities or the sciences path that she desired. She failed to hit the mark by 2%.

The nuclear physicist was not about to give up and with the support of her father she was allowed into the sciences class.

With the opportunity granted, Fridah outdid herself and worked hard attaining an A (Plain) grade in her Physics examination at the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations.

She looks back and is grateful to her Physics teacher, Mr. Orinda and the deputy principal at the school for believing in her potential.

Deputy IG Eliud Lagat: How Unfulfilled Priesthood Path Led to Mechanic Profession That Paved Way To Police Career

Deputy Inspector General of Police Eliud Lagat previously deputized former Police head Japhet Koome.

Before then, he was Commandant of the General Service Unit (GSU) and his rise to his new role has been nothing short of monumental.

The DIG was speaking in an interview with the Nation, where he narrated how his love for automotives led him to the Police Service , a career change that did not seem likely for the 52-year-old who had initially wanted to be a priest.

Lagat who undertook his secondary education at the Mother of Apostles Seminary saw becoming a Catholic priest as his next natural step, but this dream died as soon as he left the institution to train as a mechanic.

He proceeded to train in Industrial Technology at the University of Eastern Africa-Baraton where he honed his skills in mechanics. His qualifications extended to automotive engineering, in pursuit of his dream to work for a big motor vehicle garage, General Motors.

When the opportunity to join the police force came, he resorted to shelving his ambitions of his dream job. However, he was stationed at the GSU workshop at the police college, where he trained and spent his early days fitting car brakes.

“I enjoyed it. I loved things to do with vehicles,” he reminisced.

After graduating from the Kenya Police College in Kiganjo, he was deployed to the General Service Unit headquarters where he started off as a mechanic repairing police vehicles.

Now 25 years later, he has risen through the ranks, accomplishing major milestones in his career. Before his role as GSU Commandant, he headed the forensic Bomb Disposal unit and the Directorate of Reforms at DCI headquarters.

With a Master’s Degree in Armed Conflict and Peace Studies from the University of Nairobi, he has held served in various capacities such as Director Investigations Bureau and Deputy Head of the DCI Crime Scene Support Unit after a three-year stint as a forensic investigator.

In his new role, Lagat has promised a raft of changes in service delivery by the law enforcers, which he intends to undertake by first transforming the police service.

“It’s the small things that count. I want to see officers enjoy their work. I also want the police to serve the public with dedication,“ he stated.

Mary Mwangi: Double M Buses Ownership, And How The Giant Bus Company Nearly Collapsed

The epitaph of Double M Express Connection is already being written as the commuter passenger bus company is faced with an uncertain future.

Pundits-including roadside commentators- have blamed poor management for the sad state of affairs, reports that have been rubbished by one of the founders.

For beginners, ‘Double M’ was founded by the late Mwangi Mugo and his wife Mary Mwangi in 1979, then specializing in Matatu fabrication.

Entry Into Passenger Business

Express Connection, the company that owns Double M, started passenger transport business in 1986. The bus company was a breath of fresh air in a sector dominated by the ill-mannered ‘Manyanga culture’.

The staff looked and acted professional in their blue shirts (for conductors), black ties, black sweater vests and black trousers and while the drivers donned purple shirts.

Double M did not play music as is the norm ‘Nganyas’ and standing passengers, preachers and hawkers were not allowed on-board. Passengers were also issued with tickets. All this happened before the ‘Michuki rules’ took effect.

By 2010, the Express Connection had a fleet of over 105 buses. The company had a total of 250 employees, 25 being women.

Career

Mrs Mary Mwangi worked at the National Hospital Insurance Fund as an accounts clerk. She called it quits to concentrate on what was at one point the best managed commuter bus company in Kenya. In an interview with the Standard, Mrs Mwangi said she was-

“……..fully involved in the business from the start and worked tirelessly to make it work.”

She told the publication that men found it odd when she was manning a stage at night.

“At the time, however, some men saw it as q***r for a woman to be out there manning a stage even at night.”

The managing director of Express Management took full management of the company when her husband passed away in 2011.

Political ambition

Mrs Mwangi is a tough businesswoman who has been in the transport industry for four decades. She understands the business and this was one of the reasons she wanted to be a lawmaker. Speaking to the Daily Nation, the Express Connection MD said of her political ambitions:

“What I have been doing (bus transport) has had no representation at all, and that is why we go from bad to worse in the industry..”

She ran for the Embakasi East parliamentary seat in 2013 and 2017 and lost in both attempts. Reports emerged that a lot of money had gone to the campaigns to the detriment of the business.

She poured cold water claims saying that this was not the first time she was vying for a political seat.

“What people don’t know is that even when my husband was alive, I vied for a position in Gachoka constituency. I feel like people are insensitive,” she told Sunday Nation reporter Elvis Ondieki.

Dr. Johansen Oduor: Education And Career Profile Of Kenya’s Chief Pathologist

Dr Johansen Oduor is Kenya’s chief government pathologist, a title he has held since September 2013.

As the head of the government’s forensic pathology services, he leads other pathologists and forensic experts in investigating deaths that are sudden, unexpected, or suspicious. He also provides expert evidence in court cases involving death.

Oduor has conducted autopsies on a wide range of cases, including homicides, suicides, and natural deaths. He has also provided expert evidence in court in many high-profile cases.

Magoha’s student

Oduor holds a bachelor of science degree in medicine from the University of Nairobi which he completed in 2000.

At UON, his favorite lecturer was the late Prof. George Magoha, whom Oduor described as approachable.

“ Life as a medical school student can be challenging, and you need the support of a good lecturer like Mr. Magoha,” Oduor shared.

Magoha taught Surgery, which was Oduor’s favorite unit.

As a medical student, Odor had to interact with cadavers. His first encounter with the dead was during his first year when his lecturer divided the class into groups of six and presented cadavers that they would be examining for the next six years.

While speaking to The Standard, Oduor recalled his first and last years as an undergraduate student as the most eventful.

Throughout campus, he never engaged in romantic relationships.

However, he was a devout party animal and could often be found partying in clubs during weekends. His favorites were Visions Club along Kimathi Street and Zigzag in Hurlingam.

After graduating in 2000, he worked for a while before enrolling for a master’s in pathology and Forensic medicine at Nairobi University between 2004 to 2008.
