Kisumu fam, guess what? We’re back in Nyanza!!! 🌊🥳

Next week, we’re teaming up with Baraza Media Lab Kisumu for a two-day documentary production masterclass with the one and only (British filmmaker, producer, and OSCARS/BAFTA member), whose work has spanned more than two decades and countless award-winning documentaries.

Marc’s career stretches from Sundance premieres like Marianne & Leonard: Words of Love to deeply rooted stories from our region like Albino United in Tanzania and now that he calls Kenya home, we’re excited to have him share his experience right here in Kisumu. The sessions will be hands-on, focused, and packed with insights you can apply directly to your own work.

Baraza’s Kisumu space has quickly become a creative home for storytellers in the region, and we can’t wait to fill it with filmmakers eager to learn, connect, and grow.

Created as part of the Spark Peace Project in Kibera, Nairobi, the film follows children mentored by Dizze at the Coffee Ministry as they use photography to tell their stories of healing, reflection, and peace. Shot and directed by youth (ages 12–24), this documentary shows how storytelling can spark change.

Huge thanks to our partners: Students Rebuild, Creative Visions Foundation, CFK Africa, The Coffee Ministry, and What's Good Media🙏🏾

Our Story

Slum Film Festival is a community-based organization that promotes film and film making in slums and marginalized communities around the world, through training workshops and classes - FilmLabs - and an annual film festival by the same name, featuring stories from, by, and about people living in urban slums. It is both a celebration of the creativity of filmmakers living and working in slums, as well as an opportunity to promote - through a week of outdoor & in door screenings - a diverse range of films within communities with limited or no access to cinema. Our vision is to develop a network of partnerships with media organizations and slum based groups, organizing screenings and events across the world’s informal settlements, promoting and sharing slum stories, and becoming a key network for the distribution of films made by and about slum communities.
