Kenya is currently negotiating a proposal to expand the power plant attached to Dangote’s upcoming Lamu refinery into a mega 1,000MW project.

What does this mean for Kenya?
✓ Reliable power for the Lamu Special Economic Zone
✓ A massive boost for local manufacturing and industrial clusters
✓ Excess electricity potentially feeding into Kenya Power for consumers

If greenlit, this project will transform Lamu from a coastal town into a bustling regional industrial hub.

Kenya’s talks with Dangote could turn the Lamu refinery into an anchor for LNG power, industrial growth and a new Tanzania-Kenya gas connection.

Equity Bank Kenya just did something most African banks usually avoid: putting $90 million of its own balance sheet into smallholder climate adaptation.

In partnership with IFAD, Equity launched the $200M Africa Rural Climate Adaptation Finance Mechanism (ARCAFIM) across Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania and Rwanda. The goal isn't charity it's to turn rural climate adaptation into a mainstream, profitable banking product.

If this risk sharing model succeeds, it could unlock a template for commercial banks across the continent.

Equity Group and IFAD have launched a $200m mechanism to finance climate adaptation for farmers and rural businesses across East Africa.

For a commercial rider, time spent waiting for a battery to charge is time away from earning. That is where ARC Ride’s battery swapping model gets interesting.

The African electric mobility company has raised $33.3 million to expand its swapping network, add 5,000 electric motorcycles and grow its operations in Kenya, while entering Ghana, South Africa, Tanzania and Uganda. The Kenya expansion will cover Nairobi and the western region.

Battery infrastructure could become just as important as the motorcycles themselves as electric mobility scales across African cities.

Running a green business in Kenya often feels like hitting a brick wall when asking banks for financing. You have a great product, but banks say it’s not investment ready.

That’s about to change. A new 5 year partnership between the Kenya Bankers Association (KBA) and GGGI is stepping in to train green entrepreneurs, help structure pitch ready projects and get banks to actually fund climate and nature based businesses.

If you’re building in agriculture, clean energy or sustainability, this is a major shift to keep your eye on.

Read how this impacts local businesses:

Green financing in Kenya gets a five-year push as GGGI and KBA work to make climate and biodiversity projects more bankable.

While climate change discussions usually focus on big numbers, real solutions start on the ground with farmers and local business owners.

Africa has no shortage of climate resilient farming tech and innovative tools, but getting flexible, affordable financing to the people actually working the land remains a massive hurdle. Without proper crop insurance and risk sharing models, a single bad season can wipe out years of progress.

It’s time for financial institutions to adapt their loan products so small businesses can protect their livelihoods and keep our food systems resilient.

Read more about what needs to change:

Financial leaders in Lagos and Kigali are making a similar case: climate finance must be structured around the risks faced by farmers and small businesses, with insurance, blended finance and commercial capital working together.

Aliko Dangote has confirmed that construction of the KSh2 trillion Lamu Oil Refinery begins on September 30th. Once complete, it's set to process 700,000 barrels of oil daily, making it a game-changer for East Africa’s energy security.

While a local refinery helps secure our fuel supply and creates jobs, it raises an important question for everyday consumers: will having a refinery in our backyard actually bring down prices at the pump?

As Nigeria’s experience showed, local refining capacity doesn't automatically mean cheaper petrol overnight.

What are your thoughts on this massive project? Drop a comment below and read the full story on EcoNews:

Aliko Dangote says construction of the KSh2 trillion Lamu refinery will begin on September 30. The project could reshape East Africa's petroleum supply routes.
