MELILEI

Melilei is a person that is named after spotted cows, closer to a leopard. Melildo is a leopard apart from Cheplanyket. So a person who has many spotted cattle is Melilei and his sons are Araap Melilei.

A synonym of Melilei is Pusienei. Pusien is a cow with small spots - Puspusan. A cow with big spots is called Mogoondo. But I have never heard anybody with the name Mogoondoei.

The horns of the bull below can also earn the owner another name, Seetanei because of Kiseet kuinoik

Nobody else can tell our story unless we do it.

The Relationship between the Kipsigis and the Kisii

The Abagusii, popularly known as the Tribe of the Lion, is the origin of most Kipsigis clans in Kalenjin land. There are only two original Kipsigis clans namely; Kipasisek and Kipsamaek. The rest were assimilated from Abagusii. Kipsigis are considered Kisiis because each Kisii clan is attached to a Kipsigis clan. for example Kapbecherek is purely Kisii derived from the Abachere clan where the late Kipkalia Kones came from. Boguserek is Abagusero of Kisii, mostly found in Kitutu Chache South where the likes of Onchari Oyieyo and Hon. Richard Onyonka come from. Batoborik are purely Kisiis who are known as Abatobori . Komosiik who are mostly found in Buret and Belgut are pure Kisiis who are known as Abasige in Kisii. Across Kipsigis land, there are four subtribes:
1.Kipkaikek,
2.Kassanet,
3.Kebeni
4.Ngetunyo.
All clans from Kisii were assimilated into Kipkaikek and Kebeni. Others are related to clans from Ogiek and Maasai tribes. So original Kipsigis are just a few. Most are assimilated Kisiis . Most Kisii clans are concentrated in Bomet East, Chepalungu, Belgut , Buret and Sotik, and that is why their language contains a lot of Kisii words. NYANGORES is a Kisii name. KABIANGA is a Kisii name. TENGECHA is a Kisii name, and all clans around those places trace their roots to Kisii Borabu border, Nyaribari, and Kitutu.

The Battle of Mogori

In the 1800s, Kipsigis warriors were slaughtered by a combination of Abagusii, Masai, and Kuria resulting in a tribe that had mostly women, kids, and old men. Kipsigis elders sat and agreed to get quality men to help keep the tribe alive and the best choice was Kisii men. Whenever children were fathered by mainly Kisii men, clans that emerged took Kisii names.
Kipsigis refer to Kisiis as KAMAMA to mean uncles.

This explains why until today Kipsigis girls consider Kisii men their best choice for husbands. It is in line with keeping the faith and spirit of their ances
