Safe, cheaper helmet for boda boda riders has been launched in Nairobi today.

The helmets, to be sold under $20( Kshs2,000) meet UN Standards and are expected to reduce severity of injuries on riders and passengers in case of a crash.

FIA President & UN Special Envoy for Road Safety Jean Todt, during the launch said helmets used currently are substandard and can "break like a glass" in a crash.

The new affordable helmets were developed by Formula 1 experts. Kenya will be the first country in Africa to sell the helmets

Mr. Todt and President Uhuru Kenyatta will showcase the helmets and discuss road safety ahead of the launch of the World Rally Championship tomorrow.

Also present was NTSA Director General George Njau, African Union Commissioner Amani Abou-Zeid, FIA Foundation programmes Manager Agnieszka Krasnolucka and Transaid Project Manager Grace Wahome.

Around 1.35 million people are estimated to die on the world’s roads this year, as in previous years. It is interesting to note that the number of people who die, equally tragically, from COVID-19 this year is going to be pretty similar – certainly of a similar magnitude – and this despite the prodigious global efforts to halt or slow the spread of the virus.

Perhaps we will look back on this period and remember: that’s when we decided to act decisively against road trauma too.
