DC Party Vows to Proceed with June 3 Launch Despite Kasarani Booking Revocation
The Democracy for the Citizens (DC) Party will go ahead with its planned June 3 launch despite the government's cancellation of its venue booking at Kasarani Stadium. In a statement issued on Wednesday, Irungu Nyakera who is said to be eyeing the Nairobi gubernatorial seat under the party’s ticket strongly criticized the move, calling it a calculated attack on democratic freedoms.
The stadium, which had reportedly been offered and paid for, was later denied by Sports Kenya on what Nyakera described as “flimsy and suspicious grounds.”
“The government’s decision to cancel the DC Party’s venue booking at Kasarani is a direct assault on constitutionalism, the rule of law, and democratic space in Kenya,” he said.
Nyakera accused the state of using administrative tactics to sabotage legitimate political activity and warned that the trend poses a threat to the country's democratic future.
“The letters from Sports Kenya reveal sheer contempt for legal process. This is not just venue politics it is political sabotage that sets a dangerous precedent for authoritarian rule,” he added.
He called on the government to reverse what he termed an unconstitutional act and to respect the rights of all Kenyans to organize and participate in political life without interference.
Despite the cancellation, Nyakera affirmed that the DC Party’s launch will proceed as scheduled.
“The DC Party launch remains set for 3rd June at Kasarani Grounds. Should the gates be locked, we shall hold it on Thika Road. Come prepared. Come in comfortable shoes,” the statement concluded.
