Fr CK, explain to me; Why do Catholics bow down to Mary and make images of her? Isn't that idolatry? Please post it on your page, for many to learn.

My friend, I admit that this is a common and important question, especially from a Protestant or non-Christian perspective. Here's my clear and respectful explanation;

1. Do Catholics "bow down" to Mary?

Catholics venerate Mary, but they do not worship her. In Catholic theology, there's a sharp distinction between:

Latria – worship and adoration due to God alone

Dulia – veneration or honor given to saints

Hyperdulia – a special veneration given uniquely to Mary, because she is the mother of Jesus (God the Son)

So when Catholics kneel before a statue of Mary or ask for her intercession, they’re not treating her as divine, but as a beloved servant of God who points to Christ.

2. What about the images and statues of Mary? Isn't that forbidden?

In Exodus 20:4–5, God commands:

“You shall not make for yourself a carved image... you shall not bow down to them or serve them.”

Catholics believe this commandment forbids idolatry, not all use of images. In fact:

God later commands images for religious purposes: e.g., cherubim on the Ark of the Covenant (Exodus 25:18–22).

Catholics use statues and icons as visual reminders, much like Christians might keep a cross or a Bible verse on their wall.

Bowing or kneeling before a statue isn’t the same as worshipping it. It’s like kneeling at a grave or a memorial — it’s about respect and remembrance, not idol worship.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC 2132) clarifies:

“The Christian veneration of images is not contrary to the first commandment... the honor paid to sacred images is a 'respectful veneration,' not the adoration due to God alone.”

3. Why so much attention to Mary?

Mary is honored because:

She is the Mother of Jesus, and by extension, called “Mother of God” (because Jesus is fully God and fully man).
