A Kisii man, Jones Bogonko Onchonga, has been arrested for allegedly posing as a Catholic priest and administering sacraments without authorization.

The Catholic Diocese of Lodwar says Onchonga used falsified Church documents and carried out priestly duties at several churches, including St. Augustine Cathedral, Kalokol, St. Thomas Chapel and St. Mary’s Lodaraja. He was also reportedly seen celebrating Mass alongside Bishop John Mbinda before his identity was exposed.

The Diocese has disowned him as a Catholic priest and warned the public against engaging with him in any priestly capacity.

DRC Ebola Outbreak 'is Now Deadliest' in Country’s History: Africa CDC Official

🇨🇩 Democratic Republic of Congo is in need of "urgency and focus" with "case fatality rate nearing 50%," Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention Director-General Jean Kaseya said.

"Every delay costs lives. The moment demands decisive, unified action," he added.

🔊More than 5,000 cases and 2,320 deaths have been reported across six provinces, Kaseya noted.
