apan’s Ambassador to Russia, Akira Muto, spent about 25 minutes at the Russian Foreign Ministry after being summoned over Tokyo’s objections to President Vladimir Putin’s visit to Iturup in the disputed Kuril Islands. Muto had initially declined to attend the meeting, citing health concerns, but appeared after Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov publicly criticized his absence. Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova had earlier joked that Muto had “suddenly felt much better” following Lavrov’s remarks. After the meeting, the ambassador left without speaking to reporters.

New Zealand Foreign Minister Winston Peters has come under fire after telling a Chinese-born opposition lawmaker to "go back to your own country" during a heated parliamentary debate, prompting condemnation at home and a formal diplomatic protest from Beijing.

The remarks were directed at Green Party MP Lawrence Xu-Nan, who was born in China but grew up in New Zealand. Peters responded to heckling by saying, "Go back to your own country... That's where they lie like a flatfish... This is called a democracy, unlike what you're used to. Go back to where you've come from, you loudmouth."

China has lodged a formal protest through its embassy, calling on New Zealand to avoid rhetoric that could damage bilateral relations. Peters, however, defended his remarks, insisting they were aimed at defending New Zealand's democracy and dismissed his critics as "pearl-clutchers" and "communist shills."
