I believe one of the many pathways to reducing poverty in the context of childcare is to treat it as we would treat children in our own homes: with no shortcuts.

World Environment Day calls for deep reflection on how environmental degradation drives human suffering. Across Kenya, climate change is not a distant threat. It is an immediate crisis affecting millions of livelihoods.

Deforestation, pollution, and prolonged droughts strip away the natural resources that communities rely on for survival. These ecological crises exacerbate poverty, displacement, and social instability. While local communities manage these natural resources daily, they are frequently excluded from the high level policy decisions that dictate their future.

The Gender Desk advocates for environmental policies that prioritize human rights and community led governance. Sustainable conservation is impossible without equity and fair resource distribution.

Civil society organizations and human rights activists in Nairobi have renewed calls for urgent action to end the rising cases of femicide in Kenya, saying women and girls continue to lose their lives despite numerous promises and recommendations aimed at addressing gender-based violence.

The activists made the call on June 1, 2026, urging the government to take concrete steps to protect women and girls from violence.

Madaraka Day carries a simple question. Who holds power in daily life and who waits for it?

Many Kenyans still face barriers to education, safety, fair work, and public voice. Women and girls carry heavy expectations while fighting for equal space in leadership and opportunity.

Independence was a starting point. Real freedom shows in access, dignity, and voice for everyone.

What part of daily life still feels unequal in your community?

The Gender Desk joined Feminist for Peace, Rights, and Justice Center in Kibra as they unveiled a locally produced sanitary pad brand designed to improve access to menstrual products for vulnerable girls in Kibra and other communities.

Support this initiative in any way you can to help extend its reach to more girls in need.

The groups further point to inadequate sanitation infrastructure in schools, including shortages of clean water, privacy, disposal facilities, and toilets suitable for menstruating girls.

They warn that period poverty continues to expose girls to stigma, humiliation, violence, school dropout, and in some cases transactional s*x as they struggle to access menstrual hygiene products.

The coalition rejects the normalization of maternal deaths, stigma surrounding abortion and menstrual health, underfunding of women's healthcare, and what it calls the silence of duty bearers on women's health issues.
