*HAVE YOU EVER MENSTRUATED WITH YOUR LUNGS? I HAVE🥲AND IT'S SCARY AS HELL
I’m a 29-year-old woman from Kiambu County, and I’m here to talk about something I didn’t even know existed until it nearly broke me… *thoracic endometriosis*. Yes. That’s endometriosis *in the chest*. Wild, right?
It started subtly... weird chest pain,,,, that came every month like clockwork. I'd feel short of breath, shoulder pain, even chest heaviness during my period. At first, I thought it was anxiety... or maybe I was just overthinking. But it kept getting worse. Then came the coughing up of blood during my periods. Just spotting, but still...blood.
Doctors kept dismissing me... one even said maybe I was just stressed. Another one gave me antibiotics saying it's probably a respiratory infection in my chest.
But one female doctor actually listened. She sent me for a CT scan and referred me to a gynae who worked with a chest specialist. And that’s when the term *Thoracic Endometriosis Syndrome* was mentioned. I'd never heard of it in my life. I didn't know wtfff that was.
Apparently, endometrial tissue had somehow reached my lungs (still dk how) and it was shedding like it does in the uterus, but now in my chest. 😭 Scary? Very. Veryyyy🥲😭
Treatment wasn't easy either. I was put on hormonal therapy first to suppress ovulation and menstrual cycles. It helped...but the side effects were something else. Probably from another planet. I eventually needed laparoscopic surgery to remove the tissue. It's been a tough road. Recovery is still ongoing.
To any woman out there experiencing strange chest pain ama coughing blood or shoulder pain *during your periods*… please don't ignore it. It could be more than just hormones or stress. Endo is a chameleon and thoracic endometriosis is real. Get checked early enough.
