ENOUGH IS ENOUGH: OUR LEADERS MUST RESPECT THE PEOPLE THEY SERVE
There is a line between “joking” and cruelty — and a sitting Member of Parliament has just trampled over it.
When Njoroge Kūrūria of Gatūndū North wrote on social media and made fun of women over 30 who do not have children, he didn’t crack a joke. He cracked open old wounds. He mocked pain. He ridiculed silent struggles. He laughed at infertility, at loss, at delayed dreams, at medical battles, at personal choices, and at realities that many women live with every single day — quietly, bravely, and without drama.
Let us be very clear:
This was not “banter.”
This was not “harmless.”
This was not “just words.”
This was insensitive, shallow, ignorant, and deeply unfit for a national leader.
And here is the more painful truth: this kind of leadership is exactly what we get when we lower the standards of who we elect.
We have normalized mediocrity.
We have normalized noise over substance.
We have normalized handouts over policy.
We have normalized slogans over competence.
So we end up with leaders who:
Can’t articulate national issues.
Sit in Parliament like decorative furniture.
Don’t understand legislation.
Don’t read bills.
Don’t contribute to debate.
Don’t represent the people intellectually.
To survive politically, they must manufacture controversy.
They must throw cheap insults.
They must excite crowds with empty phrases.
They must keep the culture of handouts alive — because ideas and competence are not their strength.
So they resort to shock value.
They target women.
They mock the vulnerable.
They trivialize pain.
They confuse cruelty with courage.
This is not leadership.
This is national embarrassment.
In serious democracies, statements like this would trigger:
Public apologies,
Ethics investigations,
Pressure to resign,
And real consequences.
But here? We are told to “relax.”
We are told “it was just a joke.”
We are told to “move on.”
No. We will not move on.
Because words shape culture.
Because leaders set tone.
Because Parliament is not a baraza.
Because leadership is not a comedy show.
Because dignity is not negotiable.
Women are not punchlines.
Motherhood is not a measuring stick for human worth.
And Parliament is not a stage for emotional violence.
It is time we said it plainly and loudly:
We deserve better.
We demand integrity.
We demand accountability.
We demand emotional intelligence.
We demand leaders who think before they speak.
We demand leaders who know why they are in Parliament.
Let those who cannot meet this standard step aside.
Kenya does not need loud mouths.
Kenya needs leaders.
And if a leader cannot respect the people — especially women — then that leader has no moral business holding public office.
Enough is enough...
