Uganda Designates National Unity Platform (NUP) as Rebel Outfit

Kampala, January 21, 2026 — Uganda’s security agencies have officially designated the National Unity Platform (NUP) as a rebel outfit, citing alleged involvement in post-election violence and plans to disrupt the electoral process.

In a statement issued by the Ministry of Defence and Veteran Affairs through the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF), authorities said security forces neutralized 22 armed individuals allegedly linked to NUP during the post-election period, while several others were arrested across the country.

The statement further accuses some NUP leaders of promoting “protest vote” rhetoric that reportedly incited youths to confront security personnel. The party leader, Hon. Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, was mentioned in connection with the claims.

As a result, the UPDF, under the leadership of the Chief of Defence Forces, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, announced the closure of NUP offices and the arrest of its leaders.

The announcement was signed by Col. Chris Magezi, Acting Director of Defence Public Information, reaffirming the government’s commitment to maintaining peace and stability in Uganda.

This is a developing story.

“Tonj was once a centre of educational excellence, but today we no longer hear of institutions such as Mayen Abun Complex, Makerdit Primary School, Tonj Technical College, and many others. The question is: where have they gone? This is now your challenge as graduates—to use your knowledge wisely to revive and restore these institutions.”
