Kassim Mponda, known to fans as "De la Chance," was one of those rare musicians who could pick up almost any instrument and change a band's sound. Born in Tabora in 1945, he was a master of both the heavy bass lines and the intricate solo guitar work that ran Tanzanian Muziki wa Dansi. He first learned the ropes with Tabora Jazz before being hired away by Dar es Salaam's Western Jazz in the early 60s, quickly making a name for himself in the city’s live music scene. Over the next few decades, Mponda anchored the country's biggest bands, keeping time for top orchestras like Juwata Jazz and Mlimani Park. In the 1990s, he joined Shikamoo Jazz, a group made up of veteran players. While touring Europe with them, he even switched over to the keyboards on stage to make room for guest Congolese guitarist Mose Fan Fan. By the time he passed away in June 2002, Mponda had spent forty years playing a direct role in creating the sound of East African rhumba.

🇨🇩 Rosette Kamono

Many people believe that the Ba Koffiettes were an idea created by Koffi Olomidé. That is not the full story.
The idea came from a woman: Rosette Kamono.

The year was 1989, during a rehearsal in Bandalungwa. A young dancer boldly told the maestro:

"You don’t have female dancers. Take some — and start with me..."

Koffi listened.

And from the words of a woman was born one of the signatures that would later make Olomidé’s performances famous and set stages across the continent on fire.

Rosette Kamono was the first of the Ba Koffiettes.
Fifi Miss Yolo — whom I dedicated Chapter 3 of this series to — would only join later in 1990, completing the group.

When people celebrate Fifi Miss Yolo today, they are already turning to the second page of the story. The first page carries the name Rosette Kamono — a name that many have forgotten.

History often remembers the men and overlooks the women whose ideas helped shape the journey. A familiar pattern: the woman inspires, while the man receives the recognition.

So today, let us remember this name: Rosette Kamono.
The idea was hers, the success belonged to the whole team, and beyond her artistic talent, she remains a true heroine in the shadows.

🎶 FRANCO LUAMBO: A Rare Moment in Congolese Music History 🇨🇩

Towards the end of the 1960s, the legendary Franco Luambo recorded 10 songs — released as five records — in Paris alongside Congolese students from Belgium, including François Bikoko, JPF Nimy Bono, and Mike Macauley.

These recordings were released under the name Orchestre Franco, rather than OK Jazz, marking a unique chapter in Franco’s illustrious musical journey.

📸 In the photo:

Seated: Franco Luambo, Flavien Kasa-Vubu, and Bono.

A beautiful piece of Congolese rumba history preserved in time. 🎸✨

The Rise and Fall of an Unmatched Atalaku: Kila Mbongo

Alcohol severely derailed the life and career of former Extra Musica atalaku (animator), Mr. Kila Mbongo Mazikou (popularly known as Kila Mbongo Masikoni). He became an alcoholic and was left almost homeless while living in Belgium. Recognizing his dire situation, well-wishers and fellow artists stepped in to rescue him, relocating him to France to receive urgent hospital care and treatment.

His signature, high-pitched tenor animating voice completely dominated the tracks and drove the energy behind some of the group's most legendary albums, including:

1. Les Nouveaux Missiles (1995)
2. Confirmation (1996)
3. Ouragan (1997)
4. État Major (1998)
5. Shalaï (1999)
