Women’s fertility typically drops in their mid-30s, long blamed on aging eggs. But new research shows that changes in ovarian tissue and support cells play a major role too.

Using mice and human samples, scientists mapped o***y cells across ages. They found:
- Older eggs in mice and humans are surprisingly similar.
- Support cells like granulosa and glial cells influence egg development.
- Manipulating glial cells in mice triggered PCOS-like symptoms.
- Human ovaries stiffen and develop gaps with age, unlike mice.

These findings suggest fertility decline stems from the o***y’s changing structure—not just the eggs. Animal models like mice could help develop treatments for PCOS and infertility, advancing long-underfunded women’s health research.

A new report from the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) reveals that, despite intensified global action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO₂) levels soared to an all-time high in 2024.

Between 2023 and 2024, the annual CO₂ growth rate hit 3.5 parts per million (ppm)—three times higher than the average rate in the 1960s—marking the steepest single-year rise since modern monitoring began in 1957.

Kenya has released Sh30.89 billion to commercial banks and construction companies for road projects carried out under the government’s annuity programme across 11 counties.

The annuity model enables private contractors to construct and maintain roads over a set period, with the government repaying its share of the project cost in phased instalments after completion. Both parties—contractors and the government—jointly finance the total cost of the infrastructure.

To meet their contribution, contractors typically borrow from banks, with the government reimbursing these loans over time to ensure the roads are built and maintained effectively.

According to Treasury data, Sh20.56 billion was allocated to lenders involved in building 90.55 kilometres of roads in Kajiado County. A further Sh5.94 billion was disbursed for 44.72 kilometres of roads connecting six counties in central Kenya, while Sh4.39 billion covered 35.3 kilometres of roadworks in western Kenya.
