Mine is to remind you to train your trees as early as possible.

Shape the canopy while the trees are still young. Do regular cutbacks whenever necessary, and build the structure you want from the beginning. It will serve you for many years without giving you management headaches.

The hardest time to start shaping an avocado tree is when it has already reached maturity. At that stage, you are caught between two difficult decisions: cut back heavily and restart the canopy, sacrificing production for a season or two, or leave the tree as it is and continue struggling with a poorly structured orchard year after year.

A well-trained tree is easier to prune, spray, harvest, and manage. The earlier you give your trees the right structure, the longer they will reward you with efficient management and consistent production.

Folliage

After harvesting, the tree enters the vegetative stage. This is the period when farmers should focus on building and protecting healthy foliage. Every new leaf produced during this stage becomes a natural umbrella for the next crop.

If the canopy remains thin because of poor nutrition, pests, diseases, or excessive pruning, many fruits will later be exposed to direct sunlight, increasing the risk of sunburn, poor fruit quality, and market losses.

Skip any other management practice if you must, but never skip manure application.

Synthetic fertilizers only give the tree a temporary nutrient boost. Once dissolved, the uptake completed in about 3โ€“7 days. After that, what will the tree feed on for the next several weeks or months before the next fertilizer application?

That is where manure comes in. Manure is a slow-release nutrient source. It continues feeding the tree over time while improving soil structure, increasing water-holding capacity, and supporting beneficial soil microorganisms that keep nutrients available for longer.

Think about it.

Reminder

If your orchard experiences a hailstones, spray a copper-based fungicide as soon as possible, preferably a green copper.

The objective is to seal fresh wounds on the fruits and stems, reducing entry points for fungal and bacterial infections while protecting the tree as it recovers.

If yes, you must accept that you are signing a long-term contract with the soil and water on your farm.

Farming is not just about feeding plants, it is about building soil that can work for you season after season. Good soil composition, active biology, and organic matter are the foundation. When soil life is healthy, nutrients cycle naturally, roots explore freely, and crops respond with stability.

Water follows soil. Well-structured, biologically active soils absorb, store, and release moisture efficiently. Poor soils waste water, demand constant irrigation, and still leave crops stressed.

If your system only works when it rains perfectly or when pumps run nonstop, then it is not a system.

Do not expect premium fruits from exhausted soil.

Feed your soil with enough organic manure. Protect it with mulch to conserve moisture, regulate temperature, and support the beneficial organisms that keep the soil alive.

A fertile, moist, and protected soil creates the right environment for your avocado tree to make the best use of both organic and inorganic nutrients.

I have managed orchards with one principle: "๐…๐ซ๐จ๐ฆ ๐ญ๐ก๐ž ๐ฌ๐จ๐ข๐ฅ ๐ฎ๐ฉ." The soil comes first. It must be well fed and well protected, and I have seen how trees respond when this is done consistently.

I have also walked through orchards where manure and mulching were neglected. I know the difference.

The choice is yours.

Sustainable farming doesn't have to be expensive.

It requires strategy, good planning, consistency, and precision.

And when those four come together, the orchard will reward you season after season.
