Dolly Parton was one of the most influential figures in country musicโa singer, songwriter, actress, businesswoman, and philanthropist whose career lasted more than six decades. She died on August 25, 2026, at age 80.
Early life
Dolly Rebecca Parton was born January 19, 1946, in Locust Ridge, Tennessee, in the Great Smoky Mountains. She was the fourth of 12 children in a poor Appalachian family. Music was central to her childhood, particularly church and traditional mountain music. She began writing songs as a child, performed on local television by age ten, and appeared at the Grand Ole Opry when she was 13.
After graduating from high school in 1964, she immediately moved to Nashville to pursue music professionally. On her first day there she met Carl Dean, whom she married in 1966; they remained married until his death in 2025.
Becoming a star
Her major breakthrough came in 1967, when she joined The Porter Wagoner Show. Her partnership with Porter Wagoner made her nationally known, but Dolly increasingly wanted an independent career. She became a major solo star in the 1970s with songs including โJoshua,โ โJolene,โ โCoat of Many Colors,โ and โI Will Always Love You.โ
โI Will Always Love Youโ was originally written as a farewell to Wagoner when Dolly left their professional partnership. Nearly two decades later, Whitney Houston's recording of the song became an enormous international hit.
Movies, pop music and business
Dolly successfully crossed from country into mainstream pop and Hollywood. Her starring role in 9 to 5 (1980) became one of her best-known films, and she wrote and performed its hit title song. She later appeared in films including The Best Little Wh******se in Texas and Steel Magnolias.
She was also an unusually successful businesswoman. She became closely associated with Dollywood, the Tennessee theme park that helped create jobs and tourism in the region where she grew up.
Giving back
One of the defining parts of Dolly's later life was philanthropy. In 1995, she founded the Imagination Library, which sends free books to young children. The program eventually distributed hundreds of millions of books internationally. She also supported education, disaster relief and medical research.
Legacy
Dolly wrote roughly 3,000 songs during her life and moved comfortably among country, pop, bluegrass, gospel and rock. She was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1999, Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2001, and Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2022.
Her life is remarkable partly because of the distance she traveledโfrom a childhood of severe poverty in rural Tennessee to international fameโwhile repeatedly drawing on that childhood for her songs. Her public image could be flamboyant and humorous, but underneath it was a serious songwriter and highly capable businesswoman who maintained unusual control over her work.
