2. "In 2023, there was a very violent reaction to our demonstrations and we lost about 70 people at that time. The international community intervened and we had a conversation with President Ruto that led to the NADCO report."
3. "Had the NADCO report been implemented earlier, we would not have ended up with the 2024 GenZ protests, because the issues they were raising were very similar to the ones we were raising the previous year."
4. "In 2024, the youths asked me to stay home, and I did respect their wishes and I stayed home. They went further than we had gone, stormed parliament, the Judiciary; and were on their way to State House when they were stopped."
5. "There was a danger ultimately that the military would take over. We were almost on the brink of that happening at that time. That was going to create a state of anarchy in our country."
6. "In that charged environment, President Uhuru Kenyatta called me (he was in the US), and suggested that although he knows I did not want to talk to Mr Ruto, in the interest of the country, I needed to find a way of talking to him."
7. "I did not have to eventually look for Mr Ruto, he asked that he wanted to come and see me and agreed that we could talk. I was very clear to him and told him that these (GenZ protests) issues had come up because you had refused to implement the NADCO report - and under these circumstances we must have a broader conversation that must bring people together."
8. "He was reluctant in the beginning but eventually agreed to discuss the issues in contention, but of course, these were rejected by the GenZ that it was a waste of time. At that time, the country was at a stalemate."
