BREAKING NEWS | Several students from Bishop Sulumeti Girls High School in Lugari, Kakamega County, were rushed to Lumakanda County Hospital on Sunday night after a gunshot scare during a police intervention to contain a protest that threatened to escalate.
The students had reportedly switched off the school's main power supply and began hurling stones indiscriminately while chanting, "We want to go home," prompting police officers to fire warning shots into the air.
Videos obtained by WKT show some of the students coughing as they received treatment, while others were seen lying on hospital beds in their school uniforms as hospital staff attended to them, with police officers also present at the facility.
Speaking to WKT, Lumakanda Location Chief Celestine Maino, who dismissed reports of a fire incident in the school, said injuries were sustained and confirmed that dozens of students taken to hospital were treated and later discharged.
WKT has established that the protest was allegedly sparked by a prolonged water shortage at the school.
