Cost management and cost control rank as the most important problems most construction businesses face globally, according to Autodesk’s “Status of Design & Make 2024 Report.”’
A quantity surveyor’s key work revolves around cost management and cost control of construction and infrastructure projects. With traditional methods gradually being replaced by automations, such as BIM and AI, why is this problem still prevalent?
BIM promises to automate repetitive quantity takeoff work and improve the accuracy and reliability of cost estimates if used appropriately. So, if this is the case, why are we still experiencing challenges in cost management and cost control?
I have set myself out on a quest to understand the disconnect between BIM and the practical roles it plays in cost estimating.
In Kenya, as one of the key economic hubs in the Eastern African Market, how are quantity surveyors utilising BIM to address these challenges? Are there tangible benefits that we can attribute to its usage in cost management by quantity surveyors in Kenya?
If you are reading this and you are a practising quantity surveyor, your insights, experiences, ideas, perceptions, and suggestions are needed to shape the future of quantity surveying practice in Kenya.
