UPDATE: On a day the world is celebrating mothers, grief has engulfed Romos in West Pokot County after 15 miners lost their lives when a gold mining pit collapsed — 12 of them were mothers.

These women woke up before dawn, not to celebrate Mother’s Day, but to fight for the survival of their families. They left home hoping to return with something for their children, only for tragedy to strike at the dangerous mining site.

Today, Kenya is not only mourning miners. It is mourning mothers, breadwinners, caregivers, and the silent heroes whose sacrifices kept many homes alive. Their children will now mark Mother’s Day with painful memories instead of joy.

May the souls of the departed rest in peace

UPDATE: Turkana North MP Ekwom Nabuin has publicly endorsed MP aspirant, Amfrey Amoni as his preferred successor for 2027 as he eyes the governor’s seat, sparking mixed reactions across the Turkana united opposition faction.

According to political observers, backing Amoni over former Speaker Chris Nakuleu, who is also eyeing the seat, has exposed internal cracks within Team Okoa Turkana (TOT), signaling growing divisions in the newly formed opposition alliance ahead of the 2027 General Elections.

UPDATE: Construction of the Turkana Stadium, pledged by President William Ruto, is set to begin at Ekalees Centre in Lodwar following an initial site visit by the Ministry of Defence and the project contractor.

Turkana Deputy Governor Dr. John Erus on Tuesday hosted a delegation from the Ministry of Defence, which visited the county to assess the site alongside the contractor..

The visit is expected to pave the way for the groundbreaking.

Last year, President William Ruto announced plans to build a KSh 900 million stadium in Lodwar, even as former Governor Josphat Nanok’s administration had, in 2021, unveiled designs for a KSh 2.7 billion Ekaales Stadium featuring cultural and sustainable elements.

MESSAGE FROM kalemngorok Elites.

We strongly condemn the recently released Katilu Ward bursary beneficiaries list for college and university students in Turkana County. As concerned residents and educated members of Kalemngorok sub-location, we believe this list represents a serious injustice and a betrayal of the many deserving students whose futures depend on fair access to education support.

Instead of prioritizing orphans, vulnerable learners, and genuinely needy students, the allocation appears to favor individuals with personal connections to those managing the bursary process. This raises serious concerns about transparency, accountability, and integrity.

We highlight the following irregularities:

* Some beneficiaries have received bursary allocations more than once, including funding for both driving school and college, No.5 and No.63 because he his the son of the representative raising questions about fairness.
* Individuals with clear conflicts of interest—such as relatives of those overseeing the bursary—have been prioritized No.143 who is aspiring MCA katilu ward Hon.Tioko
* Beneficiaries include individuals who are already employed or financially stable, including No.145 and No.221 who are long-serving professionals and they are in the county payrolls
* Repeated names like No.155 and No.157
* and close family relations among beneficiaries suggest nepotism rather than merit-based selection.

These actions undermine the purpose of the bursary, which is to uplift disadvantaged students and support equal opportunity in education.

We therefore demand:

* Immediate suspension and review of the current bursary list.
* Formation of a new, independent, and transparent committee to oversee future allocations.
* Public accountability from all responsible offices, including the Ministry of Education officials, ward leadership, and relevant county authorities.
* Clear criteria and community involvement in future beneficiary selection.

We also ask: what happens to the many orphans and vulnerable students in Kalemngorok who have been excluded? Who will stand for their future?

Leadership must be guided by fairness, integrity, and service—not favoritism. This issue goes beyond individuals; it is about justice for an entire community.
