Uasin Gishu County is perceived as a United Democratic Alliance (UDA) political stronghold, and the nominations taking place on Thursday as some sort of a mini-general election.

The race to succeed Governor Jackson Mandago has attracted 9 aspirants in what is expected to be a fierce contest for the UDA ticket.

Uasin Gishu, the home county of Deputy President William Ruto, holds an approximated registered voter population of 500,000 voters, a majority considered supporters of the DP and UDA.Jonathan Bii, popularly known as ‘Koti Moja’, is one of those eyeing the governor’s seat, his third stab at the position; he once also ran against DP Ruto for the Eldoret North seat, albeit unsuccessfully.

“Kwa sababu ya kukaa na watu, nimekuwa mtu wa kule mashinani; mtu ambaye ako chini na anajua vile watu wanaishi kule chini na shida zao,” he said.

‘Koti Moja’, Swahili for one coat, has been something of an iconic political brand for Bii.

He stated: “Wakati nilitaka kuomba kura ya ugavana, my competitors wakasema nimeanza mapema, eti hii mtu ya koti moja atamaliza mwendo kweli, by the time anamaliza si hiyo koti itakuwa imekwisha?”

Also throwing his hat on the ring is Soy Member of Parliament Caleb Kositany, a close ally of the deputy president.

“Nobody should be scared about my association with the deputy president, he’s a long time friend even before we joined politics, so that has nothing to do with the leadership…it is not an added advantage,” he said.

Kositany believes he is the best person to take over from Governor Mandago, who will be fighting a different battle in the Senate race.

“Yes, I might come from a privileged family, but I was brought up in a way that I had to look up and ensure that even those who don’t have as much as we do, we should work with them and ensure that we deliver justice to everyone,” added the legislator.

Ambassador Sarah Serem is also in the race, and is famous for her firm stance when she headed the Salaries and Remuneration Commissio

Deputy President William Ruto has condemned the violence witnessed during the ODM party leader Raila Odinga’s tour in Usain Gishu County.

While condemning the incident, DP Ruto said that every politician has the right to sell their agenda in every part of the country.

“Kenyans should listen, evaluate their policies and then decide whom to support. We should listen, evaluate their policies and then decide whom to support,” said Ruto in a tweet Friday evening.

“Political violence is retrogressive, divisive and tears down our democracy. We condemn and reject it without reservation,” he added.

The Deputy President spoke after Odinga’s Rift Valley tour was marred by violence after rowdy youth hurled stones at his motorcade on Friday.

The Azimo la Umoja Presidential candidate was in Uasin Gishu County to attend the burial of Mzee Jackson Kibor as part of his three-day tour to DP Ruto’s back yard.

During the incident, a chopper ferrying the ODM boss was stoned by the rowdy youth damaging the choppers air shield shortly after his motorcade was pelted with stones.

According to Odinga, the threat came in the form of youth mobilized, armed and paid to cause mayhem and disorder, destroy property and even take away lives in a bid to create political zones in the country.

Odinga has so far held, Uasin Gishu Governor Jackson Mandago and Soy MP Caleb Kositany responsible for the ugly incidence.

Elgeyo Marakwet Senator Kipchumba Murkomen has called upon area residents with information to assist the police to identify and apprehend the perpetrators.

“We must nip this barbaric behavior in the bud and we must learn to be consistent and bipartisan in our condemnation of such evil acts,” he said.

“The IG Police must investigate this matter, arrest and charge the culprits. We cannot condone violence anywhere. As a team that has suffered violence in Kenol, Kondele and Embakasi East to name a

Famous Uasin Gishu County Businessman and politician Bundotich Zedekiah alias Buzeki seems to have softened his stand on Deputy President William Ruto's UDA party.

This was after Buzeki on Tuesday, came out to reveal that he does not oppose any political party which is popular among Uasin Gishu county residents. This is contrary to the recent past when Buzeki had been criticizing the DP and poking holes in his presidential bid.

According to Buzeki's recent change of heart, Uasin Gishu residents have the freedom to elect leaders from political parties of their choice. He, however, urged them to elect him on an independent ticket for the gubernatorial post and pick candidates for other elective seats from their party of choices.

"I am running as an Independent candidate. This means I am not affiliated to any political party. It also means I do not oppose any political party. What binds you and me are your wishes and aspirations. I am leaving you with the freedom to make Independent decisions on your other political choices" read his post

He went ahead to plead with residents to elect him based on his leadership plans and manifestos for Uasin Gishu, urging them not to punish him for not "hiding under party waves". He pleaded with them to allow him to run independently.

"I know it's easy to hide under party waves but for your sake let me choose the hard way" he added
