GOVERNMENT TO PAY VILLAGE ELDERS KSh 3K MONTHLY IN NEW PLAN.
The government has proposed a monthly stipend of KSh 3,000 for village elders across the country in a move aimed at recognising the crucial role they play in local administration, peace building and security matters.
Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo said the programme is expected to benefit more than 110,000 village elders if approved in the 2026/2027 financial year budget.
The proposed KSh 3K monthly payment is expected to cost the government about KSh 4 billion annually, with lawmakers warning that increasing the stipend to KSh 5,000 would push the budget to between KSh 5.5 billion and KSh 6 billion every year.
Speaking before the Departmental Committee on Administration and Internal Security in the Parliament of Kenya, Omollo revealed that the government has already developed a policy framework and criteria that will guide the identification of eligible beneficiaries.
He noted that discussions on formally recognising village elders began in 2016 and have taken nearly a decade to materialise.
Under the proposal, only village elders who are not benefiting from other government programmes such as the elderly cash transfer or community health promoter initiative will qualify for the stipend.
Lawmakers welcomed the move but challenged the government to increase the amount from KSh 3K to KSh 5K to match the payments received by community health promoters.
Narok West MP Gabriel Tongoyo said the proposal was a major step in appreciating the work village elders have been doing voluntarily for years alongside chiefs and assistant chiefs in grassroots administration and conflict resolution.
Teso North MP Oku Kaunya also called for a clear legal framework to formally anchor village elders within the national administration system.
The proposal now awaits parliamentary approval as the government moves to formally recognise village elders who have long served communities without pay.
