Painful rains in Kitere Migori county.
Heavy rains continue to wreak havoc in parts of Migori County, with traders and residents of Kitere Market in South Kamagambo Constituency counting massive losses after floods submerged businesses and homes.Mwangi’s submerged shop in kitere.Business activities at the busy market were brought to a standstill after drainage systems reportedly became blocked, causing rainwater to overflow into shops, houses, and roads. Several traders say they have lost stock worth thousands of shillings as the floods continue to paralyze operations in the area.Speaking to the press, Jackline Magrora, a grocery businesswoman at Kitere Market, called on the Migori County Government to urgently intervene and open blocked trenches and drainage channels to prevent further destruction.“The water has destroyed our businesses and even entered our houses. We are appealing to the county government to act quickly before the situation worsens,” said Magrora.Ben Mwangi, a university student and businessman operating in the market, lamented that the ongoing rains had severely disrupted his business, making it difficult for traders to earn a living.“We are suffering huge losses because customers cannot access the market. Relevant authorities should move with speed and solve this drainage problem immediately,” said Mwangi.Residents now fear the situation could deteriorate further if heavy rains persist in the region, with many calling for urgent action from both county disaster response teams and local leaders. The floods come amid continued heavy rainfall being experienced across several parts of Migori County, raising concerns over poor drainage infrastructure and preparedness in flood-prone areas.
