APA Insurance in partnership with IFC Unveils APA SHEild Programme to Enhance Financial Well-Being for Kenyan Women

APA Insurance and the International Finance Corporation (IFC) have launched a program called APA SHEild to increase access to affordable financial products for women in Kenya. The program focuses on health, wellness, personal wealth, and savings insurance, and will provide workshops and webinars to equip women with knowledge and tools to support their personal and professional financial development and security. The program aims to improve the well-being and livelihoods of Kenyan women, contributing to the country's social and economic development. According to the World Bank, 31% of Kenyan households are women-headed, making women more vulnerable to physical and financial shocks. Insurance and financial guidance can support women to protect themselves, their families, communities, and society.

APA has developed a range of women-centric non-life and life insurance solutions, including health, wellness, wealth, and protection, as well as additional value-added products and services. The program includes a Women's Cancer Care Programme called 'APA Femina Plus', which offers regular screenings and HPV vaccinations for breast and cervical cancer, as well as a cash benefit in the event of a positive diagnosis.

The partnership between APA Insurance and YuBuntu aims to create an innovative, total wellness solution exclusively for women, making a tangible and measurable impact on the lives of women and girls in Kenya.

Governor Sakaja Johnson assented to the Nairobi City County Finance Act 2023, the first comprehensive amendment to charges and levies in the last five years. The Act aims to enhance service delivery, openness, accountability, and equity in taxation, and increase revenue collection for key priority projects. The County Government will publish a comprehensive schedule of fees and charges in one document. The Act was passed unanimously by the Nairobi City County Assembly, influenced by public participation and input. Key highlights of the Act include increased charges, reduced charges, and environmental issues.
Market stalls: We initially proposed 30% levies and charges on the market stalls. However, after public participation, the charges were revised to a moderate 10% increment.

· Alcoholic drinks and licensing: The proposal to raise charges on alcoholic drinks and licensing was adopted to help control the number of drinking outlets across the County.

· City inspectorate: The impounding charges were retained in some areas and reduced in others to drive compliance.

· Outdoor advertisement and signage: We increased application fees for outdoor advertising.

· Physical planning, land, and housing: We had proposed to increase rent by 25% but following consultations we have only increased by 10%.

· Public health services: We had initially proposed new charges on Reproductive health but, during the public participation, the public expressed their views and we heard and maintained and reduced some of the charges.

· Market services: We had proposed to increase charges but following the recommendations we have retained the old charges.

· Parking. The new law introduces new parking zones that are well defined, with new charges introduced for the registration of taxis and boda-bodas.

· Alternative Provision of Basic Education and Training (APBET) Schools we have reduced their annual fee from Ksh10,000 to Ksh3,000

Marrakesh is hosting the International Monetary Fund and World Bank Group Annual Meetings from October 9th to 15th, 2023, marking 50 years since the last African convention. The theme is "For a Synodal Church Communion, participation and mission." Global financial leaders are urged to embrace a vision for Africa rooted in unity, collaborative action, and transformative mission, and to promote urgent measures to address African countries. Most African countries are still struggling to regain their 2019 economic performance level, with nearly 600 million people living in poverty and 280 million experiencing hunger. The challenges posed by the Ukraine war, regional conflicts, increasing living costs, and climate vulnerability add to the difficulties faced by the most vulnerable on the continent. Africa stands out as the most climate-vulnerable region, suffering from the consequences affecting lives, livelihoods, and economies. In preparation for the 2025 jubilee years, the Holy Father Pope Francis urged leaders to prioritize the well-being of all humanity and make choices that promote life for themselves and future generations.
We Put the following appeal
1. Remove the obstacle of debt that prevents many countries from having the resources to invest in chrisis response and protect their most vulnerable.
2.Massively Scale up the flow of resources to development in affordable terms.
3.prevent new cycles of high indebtedness by setting foundations for responsible lending and borrowing
