Our planet is in a mess because we want everything fast. We created fast food to enslave people who want food without going through the process of cooking. We created GMO crops because we want our farms to produce faster, but the negative global effects are in our faces already. And because we cannot satisfy our hunger for consumerism, we created fast fashion, with huge amounts of waste in its trail. But how fast can we go until the consequences of our misbehaviors catch up with our beaches, environment, our farms, the atmosphere, and our lives?

Millions of tons of used clothes are imported into Africa annually; 35 to 40% of those clothes are unsellable and worthless garbage. The question of where that amount of waste ends up should be a concern to everyone.

"Let food be your medicine" is not a motivational speech; it is counsel deeply rooted in how food affects health, fertility, ageing, and much of our lives.

This article was transcribed from a conversation I had with Ósìnákáchī Àkùmà Kálū on The Bridge Podcast, Episode 3.

Osinakachi Akuma Kalu, a food health and Afrolongevity
expert, shared his thoughts on the importance of food and how it shapes our lives, health, and longevity.

What if the greatest African contribution to humanity is not a resource, but a relationship?

For many Africans, the word Ubuntu may sound ordinary, but its meaning, captured in the familiar phrase: “I am because we are,” definitely carries more depth than we actually understand.

And right on the side of Ubuntu is another African word, Sawubona. Sawubona, just like Ubuntu, is an isiZulu word, and it means "I see you".

When someone says, "Sawubona" or “I see you,” as a form of greeting, the response is “Sikona”. But Sikona is not just a response to the greeting of Sawubona; it’s actually deeper than that. In its true context, Sikona means: “Before you saw me, I did not exist.”

Think about that for a moment.

Before you saw me, I did not exist. Not biologically. Not physically. But socially and emotionally.

To be seen is to be recognized. To be recognized is to be humanized. To be humanized is to be brought into relationship, and to be brought into relationship is to be accepted.

As my guest, Dr. Upenyu Majee beautifully explained in one of my Podcast episodes:

“By seeing me, you are bringing me into existence. You are humanizing me.” In other words, we must bring back humans into our humanity.

Save Africa's Indigenous Seeds Campaign. (Swahili Version)

As Africans, our indigenous seeds don't just carry the power to make food. They carry our history...our story... our culture... our pain and our victory. They tell the stories of when there was lack in Africa and when we had abundance. Every seed carries what it means to be African. Resilience. Hard work. Creativity. Wisdom. Intelligence. Heart and Ubuntu. Let us preserve them, not just for food but as libraries of how we overcame. Say no to GMO crops. Save Africa's Indigenous seeds.

Africa produces roughly 75% of the world's cocoa—the essential ingredient behind a US$200 billion global chocolate industry. Yet the continent captures only 5–7% of that value. More than 90% of the wealth generated from African cocoa is created elsewhere through processing, manufacturing, branding, marketing, and retail.

Cocoa is just one example.

Africa is home to more than 45,000 plant species, many with extraordinary nutritional, medicinal, and commercial value. Yet countless indigenous plants have been forgotten, overlooked, or left largely untapped. The continent also possesses hundreds of indigenous food crops that remain underutilized despite their remarkable resilience and nutritional richness, along with countless traditional medicinal plants that have sustained African communities for generations.

The opportunity before us is enormous. By rediscovering our botanical heritage, investing in research and innovation, and transforming these natural resources into high-value products, Africa can move beyond exporting raw materials to creating industries, jobs, and lasting prosperity. The wealth has always been here. The challenge is to recognize its value—and unlock its full potential.

Men are like candles. Men are like time.

A candle burns itself to provide light. Time gives itself to create life.

Many fathers do the same every day.

They sacrifice quietly, love deeply, and carry responsibilities that often go unseen. Let us celebrate the fathers, grandfathers, mentors, and father figures who have given so much of themselves for others.

Every day is Father's Day, and we value all the men whose presence, wisdom, and sacrifice continue to shape families and communities.

🎥 Watch the full video and share it with a father who deserves to hear these words.
