I have always maintained that, from my point of view, Opus Dei weaponizes mental healthcare in a truly grotesque way.

As a quick trip to the historical archives proved, the organization has had ample examples to follow and no shortage of unscrupulous individuals who seemingly have had no qualms about assisting Opus Dei in that effort.

It isn’t really difficult to understand why.

Opus Dei has always maintained that there is no institutionalized problem and that the negative experiences so many former members have alleged having are random outliers in an otherwise pristine and holy organization. I believe that is a lie that has served the organization well on a number of fronts. I am not the only one who feels that way.

“In these cases of depression and exhaustion, one should consult an experienced and prudent doctor – better if they are a member of the Work…it is very important to inform the Directors, in order to provide effective help to those who need it” (Opus Dei internal document "Vademecum").
