Joy’s Garden: When she arrives at her estranged father’s bachelor pad, a little girl sets out to recreate her old garden; wrecking his comfortable life. 
 
Inheritance: A young woman attends the funeral of her estranged grandfather, finding acceptance only with the village madman. He catapults her into a liminal realm for a face-off with her grandfather.

We have yet another screening coming up this weekend! Introducing to you Ngwatilo Mawiyoo in her multitudes: writer, filmmaker, actor, poet. We’ll be screening her short films and reviewing her poetry collections as we discuss her cinema together with her collaborators and poetry practice on the day.

Ngwatilo’s 2016 chapbook Dagoretti Corner, edited by Chris Abani and Kwame Dawes, includes work from her time staying with different rural Kenyan families between 2012 and 2013. It follows her first chapbook Blue Mothertongue, published in 2010.

Ngwatilo’s poems have appeared in Wasafiri, Transition, Johannesburg Review of Books, Obsidian, Kwani? and elsewhere. She’s been twice shortlisted for Brunel University’s African Poetry Prize, and twice nominated for the Pushcart Prize. She has received residency fellowships from Callaloo and Bundanon Trust, through The Africa Centre.

Ndoto Synopsis
In a foreign city, a timid and introverted young boy defies his only guardian in pursuit of a newfound friendship and a desire for belonging. Kisu, a lonely and asthmatic boy with a fear of drowning must prove his courage and loyalty to a group of mischievous and excellent Swahili swimmers so that they might teach him how to swim. The mission sets Kisu at odds with his over-protective aunt and sets him on the adventure of a lifetime filled with friendship, betrayal, and self-discovery.

Sukari Synopsis
A conservative Muslim man’s world is flipped when his wife demands something he’s never considered before—an or**sm. ABBAS and QADRA seem to have it all in the peaceful suburbs of Mombasa until she reveals a game-changing truth: she’s never been sexually satisfied. Now, Abbas is thrust into a journey of discovery, enlightenment, and, well, intimacy. 💥

Nabalayo’s practice is driven by tapping into indigenous Kenyan ancestry to weave yesterday’s memories with today’s sounds creating the magic of the future. “My creative practice is informed by the values of storytelling, cultural appreciation, archiving and celebration of diversity. I am also a visual artist and storyteller drawing the worlds I see as I sing about them. And soon I will tap into more forms of storytelling. That is the mission I am currently on!”
