Lykeang's Journey in Cambodia

Lykeang's Journey in Cambodia Journey with me as I returned to Cambodia to pursue a vision that God has given me in 2012.

Happy Thanksgiving, Merry Christmas, and Happy New Year : )

Wow, that's how long I had not updated you guys. So sorry!

My vision of starting a school still remains. I pray and pray for guidance and a team to make this happen. The thing is that it requires patience and a brave heart to step into the unknown. God's timing is different than our timing.

I went to the States for Christmas break (2 weeks). Much needed break physically and mentally. Felt fresh and rejuvenated. I landed in Cambodia at 9 pm and came to work the next day at 7:15 pm.

On top of working at my regular job, I am still with Refuge for the Poor and will actually consider a part-time position with them. I met with the board members while I was in the States. Why this decision? Mentally, I thrive there whenever I work for them. My regular job at a Christian school that I have right now, respectfully, is just a job. I'm thankful for this job; however, my heart smiles whenever I'm with students and staff at Refuge for the Poor. Furthermore, this work gives me hands-on experience that I will need to run a school. Some of those experiences include working one-on-one with the student's academic growth and spiritual growth AND working closely with the staff members to ensure their quality of work meets the expectations of the board members in the States. Please visit the Refuge for the Poor website for context.

I will be coaching middle school boys' volleyball in February. Very excited! Pray that I will have the wisdom and resilience to work with them and most importantly those kids will see Jesus in me during the season. Winning is fun but I want them to use volleyball for Jesus.

If you have any questions, please feel free to just text me or email me here: [email protected]. I'm very responsive there.

Thank you and have a blessed week ahead!

I'm back!

Wow my last update was June 2023. What happened in the last year? Why didn't I write an update? I'm an honest person. The short answer is work, random distractions, and injuries got in the way but God was there to protect me emotionally, physically, and emotionally. He never let me forget about his vision for me.

Four major things happened in the span of 1 year.

1. With lots and lots of prayer regarding my vision, God presented me an opportunity to get me closer to my actual vision (starting a Christian K-12 school). That opportunity is working for Refuge for the Poor. Throughout the year and the summer, I was/am able to work/volunteer for that center (8 staff and 34 on campus students). I have learned that growth doesn't just happen at school. It happens and starts at home. I can see myself working with this organization where I get to utilize my faith, my professional skills, and my leadership skills to benefit this organization's mission statement (which is the same as mine - to break the cycle of poverty through Christian education and Christ-like leaders). Currently, I work there as a translator if the center's founders are in town or if they have projects for me to do. Bi-weekly, I go to the center to teach life skills to university students and high school students. I hope I can impact those kids so that they can be good students at school and share Christ's love to their friends.

2. My cousin (17 years old) from the province moved in with me in January. Having a college roommate and a relative roommate are two different thing. I accepted his mom's request to be his guardian and his mentor. Let me tell you. It is not easy. But I still give God's praise because I believe he is teaching me and preparing me for big things in the future. If I want to be a leader of a school or an organization, I shall possess variety of skills and that includes biblical parenting/mentoring your own 17 years old relative.

3. My job is upgraded (same title and salary, though HAHA). I get to have my own office and I only have to stay in one location! It is a huge blessing! The leadership team is kind and they understand me and my vision. Hence, everything they make me do are all related to my vision and goals in life. Volleyball coaching is an example. We placed 2nd out 14 teams last year. This year, we are aiming for 1st place in Phnom Penh and in Hanoi, Vietnam.

4. I started to join a Celebrate Recovery (a safe place to find freedom from your hurts, hang-ups, and habits) group. 3-5 of us (men) meet weekly to share things we struggle with and be encouraged by each other's testimony and stories. I grew up neglected and with improper care by my parents. Through this weekly meeting, I am able to understand myself more when it comes to why I do things or think in a certain way.

Thank you for taking your time to read. Have a blessed week!

"Teach me your way, LORD, that I may rely on your faithfulness; give me an undivided heart, that I may fear your name" (Psalms 86:11).
