The word 'Sabai' actually originates from the Khmer word 'Sbai' (ស្បៃ). The main differences between the Khmer Sbai and Thai Sabai (Chud Thai) are:
• History: The Khmer Sbai is an ancient tradition visible on Angkor Wat carvings (12th century). The modern Thai Sabai style was largely standardized in the 1960s as part of a national costume project.
• Texture: Khmer versions often use heavy, hand-stitched beadwork and thick embroidery. Thai styles frequently use pleated fabric (Sabai Jeep) or smooth, shimmering silk.
• Symbolism: In Cambodia, the Sbai is tied to the Preah Thong and Neang Neak legend, where the groom holds the bride's Sbai tail—a specific ritual not found in the Thai tradition.
