Reigning Miss Pacific Islands calls for greater support of Micronesian islands
TARAWA, January 21, 2025 (RADIO KIRIBATI) ---- Miss Pacific Islands 2024 left Kiribati on Monday after spending two days in the capital Tarawa.
Moemoana Safa’ato’a Schwenke, who arrived in the country on Saturday, told Radio Kiribati News she was happy and honored to visit Kiribati for the first time to learn more about its culture and helped promote its tourism industry.
“It’s been beaufiful. I’ve been feeling all the love and the ‘Mauri’ experience from the people,” said Schwenke.
“I think my favourite thing is seeing the creative arts and the dancing. I think it takes you to a different place and really feel pride of the Kiribati people. It’s been an honour to be here.”
The former Miss Samoa, who was crowned the title last year in Nauru said her visit to Kiribati is part of her Micronesian tour, the first to be undertaken to the sub-region by a reigning Miss Pacific Islands.
“A lot of people in the South Pacific forget to learn more all about our Pacific region and sometimes when things are small, we tend to forget them. And these are small islands and sometimes the world forgets about them”, she said.
“I want to remind people that we have to remember them especially with the effects of climate change and all the other challenges that we face. We should keep them in our thoughts and stand in solidarity with them and keep learning about each other”.
Kiribati will be participating for the first after more than ten years of absence in this year’s Miss Pacific Islands 2025 in Solomon Islands from February 1 - 9, 2025.
Moemoana Schwenke said she’s inspired by Miss Kiribati 2024 Kimberley Tokanang’s enthusiasm and readiness, Kiribati’s contestant who will be participating for the first time in this year’s pageant.
“She’s beautiful. She’s a real island girl from Kiribati and she stands for Kiribati culture and the power of women and she’s coming to the pageant with a lot of special stories from Kiribati. And some of her stories connects Samoa and the other islands too. So there’s a lot of unity which she stands for which I am very inspired by.”…….RK News
