StoryTime : This is Princess Hwangok Statue

The first mermaid statue located on the coast of Dongbaekseom Island was erected in 1974 but destroyed in 1987 by typhoon Thelma. The surviving upper body is being preserved in Busan Museum. A new bronze seated statue, 2.5m in height and weighing 4 tons, was erected in 1989.

The mermaid statue has a sad story.

Once upon a time, in the country of mermaids known as the Narandaguk Kingdom, Princess Hwangok ("Yellow Jade") married King Eunhye of the Mugung Kingdom of Dongbaekseom Island, who had been crowned king with Heaven's blessing. The royal couple lived a happy life together, but Princess Hwangok missed her home terribly. Then, one day, the Turtle that used to serve the princess in her homeland came to see her and said, "Your Highness's Grandmother Great Dowager Queen of the Sujeongguk Kingdom gave me this piece of marble to deliver to Your Highness. Please hold it up to the moonlight on the night of the full moon." And so, when the Princess held the marble up to the light of the moon, the image of her beloved Narandaguk Kingdom appeared shining and resplendent on its surface. At that moment, the princess's legs turned into fins and she was able to swim freely under the sea. Ever since, there has been a legend that a
mermaid lived in the waters around Dongbaek Island.
